I’m delighted to be joining the speaker line up on 2nd June aimed at people working in the hair loss industry.
The title of my presentation will be: ‘The Skinification of textured hair. Combining general practice, Trichology, cosmetic science and aesthetics to benefit all hair types.’ I will be sharing how my personal experience of hair loss as a GP led to the creation of a clinic and hair product brand. I will be discussing some key lessons I learned along the way which led to an emphasis on personalise regenerative aesthetics for hair.

👀I first learned about polynucleotides for the under eye area nearly 2 years ago because it is an area that troubles a lot of people - particularly in skin of colour. This area can be difficult to treat and a good understanding of the cause is important for planning treatment.
⏳The under eye area is often the first area to show signs of ageing for several different reasons;
- The skin surrounding the eyes is very thin 0.3 mm
- The number of hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands is much lower.
- The elastic and collagen fibers in the dermis matrix are numerically few.
- There is less quantity of subcutaneous fat.
- The lymphatic/blood circulation of the eye contour area is slowed down
My own under eye area is an area that can benefit from polynucleotides to improve the skin quality. I’ve had one treatment myself to see what the experience is like.
📆One session every 21 days is recommended for a total of 3 to 4 sessions. Maintenance is one session every six months.
Side effects: slight swelling, redness, bruises, sense of warmth in the treated area. The side effects pass on their own after a few hours/days, depending on the strength of the product.
Aftercare: avoid touching the treated areas for six hours after the treatment. After that, the area can be washed with a gentle cleanser. Avoid makeup for 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercises, saunas and swimming. Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours before and after the treatments. Apply SPF afterwards

Last weekend the clinic was closed for the Regenerative Medicine summit in Manchester. The event was planned by dermafocusuk and was attended by aesthetics doctors and nurses from across the country.
The day was mainly about the use of polynucleotides and explained for skin regeneration.
Polynucleotides are a very safe and highly purified product which help your cells to do what they used to do. Ideally used in combination with other aesthetics procedures such as peels, microneedling and other injectable treatments the results are beneficial for skin quality, under eye rejuvenation, redness, pigmentation, wrinkles, acne scarring, hair improvement and skin sagging.
Polynucleotides are an excellent primer for getting better results with other procedures that follow.
This treatment has been available at this clinic for an over a year and the feedback has been positive from clients .
To help to encourage uptake the price of treatment has been reduced in the run up to Christmas.

Looking after your skin is important as part of self care.
This clinic has been recommending the Neostrata Skin Care brand for skin fitness whilst addressing skin concerns such as acne, pigmentation, sagging skin, wrinkles and dull skin. The brand has home based skin care products plus peels for the skin at home or in the clinic.

Aestheticians and clinicians working in skin care clinics attended from all over the world.
The 2 day event was a reminder of how much peer reviewed published data is involved in the Neostrata skin care brand. The presentations were an opportunity to learn more about how experienced aestheticians were using the products alongside in clinic treatments. Néw products are being launched which will be offered to clients as part of their skin care regimes. It was also good to know how the products are suitable for all skin types including skin of colour.
The skin is the largest organ of the body, so it makes sense to look after your skin to hopefully prevent something more serious.
It was fascinating to hear that panel members were treating patients with skin care and peels into their 90s with the oldest patient on the books being 102!

Hair loss at any time of life can have a significant impact on wellbeing. The menopause can be a time when this becomes more noticeable.
Everyone is different. Some people go into denial when noticing hair loss; some look for wigs/toppers/camouflage products, and others look for camaraderie with people going through a similar experience.
The menopause may bring hair loss into focus, but it is important to know that understanding the causes of hair loss is the key to success if you decide to try to save your hair.
There are many different ways to tackle hair loss including medications, procedures and cosmetic topical solutions such as for hair loss which is being used safely for a wide range of hair loss disorders, and who I thank for the opportunity to contribute on the subject.
There is no magic bullet for treating hair loss. A holistic combination of approaches is needed. This is why I only offer treatments following a consultation.

Recently hair loss clients have been asking about whether it is worth doing microneedling for hair loss.
It all depends on what type of hair loss you are dealing with, the depth of the needle, the type of device, and what is being used with it.
Microneedling at the deeper depth is better done in a clinic setting by someone who is trained. I have noticed that with a standard roller device at 1mm depth the experience seems to be painful. Putting local anaesthetic on the face helps, but on the scalp where there is hair it can be messy.
I therefore wanted to experience an alternative microneedling device, that would be less painful. I was fortunate to experience this at the Wigmore Presents conference. It really wasn't painful at all, even at the deeper depth. I had a full treatment on my hair and tried the device on my scalp. Amazingly the device inserts the needles into the skin 150 times peri second!
The original derma roller xcellaris pro twist device can be used in hair restoration, pigmentation, acne scarring and facial rejuvenation.
This is why I enjoy having an interest in aesthetics, because many of the techniques and technologies used for the face and body can be used to benefit the scalp.

😔Scalp psoriasis can be a challenging experience, with additional factors to consider in Afro textured hair. This includes cleansing routines. There is a video on TikTok showing a lady removing her scalp scale manually (search dandruff scrape by dandruffscraper). There are better ways than this to deal with scalp scale.

Help for hair loss, scalp problems and skin concerns
We intuitively know that hair can be a marker of health and wellbeing, yet problems with the hair and scalp are often thought of as simply cosmetic. This is unfortunate, because hair is a major source of identity and confidence, and people find that their styling options are limited.
This business grew out of the observation that most GPs only get a few days training in skin and hair conditions, and it can be challenging to find trustworthy sources of information. The business owner has combined the experience gained from being an NHS GP in England and training in trichology to produce a one stop shop for hair loss. The clinic recognises the additional issues for afro-textured hair and encourages early seeking of advice to ensure that hair is not permanently lost.
