✨Teaching Points ✨

When I welcome a client into my space, I like to give them a little time to sit and settle before climbing onto the couch.
Often they arrive straight from a busy day and need a few quiet moments for their mind and body to slow down.

I find that this pause helps them get so much more than just the physical benefit of the treatment. For me, the short chat before we begin is just as important as the treatment itself. It gives the client a chance to tell me how they are, what has been happening since their last visit, or, if they are new, why they have chosen to come.

Making space for this conversation shows the client they are not just another booking to get through, but someone who is valued and cared for.

If you would like to start learning more with me, why not pop me a message and I will sign up for news on new courses coming up as well as useful information to all you therapists out there.

✨ I’ve been quietly working away behind the scenes on something rather exciting… a full rebrand of Mind & Body Health!

This rebrand will bring both my therapy work and training courses together under one clear, cohesive identity, something that truly reflects who I am, what I offer, and how I want people to feel when they visit my website or social media pages.

Rebranding isn’t a quick or easy process, it has taken a lot of reflection about who I want to attract, how I want to show up in my business, and most importantly, how I want to feel about the brand myself, not just now, but for years to come.

I’ve been lucky to have the incredible support of my brilliant designer and friend, Melanie Lucas, who’s patiently guided me through the world of branding, logos, and colour psychology, things I didn’t know much about before, but now realise are key in representing me as a therapist and educator.

🙏 Thank you so much, Mel, for your creativity, patience, and for helping me bring this vision to life.

✨ I can’t wait to share the new look with you all very soon … watch this space!

Hey Y’all! Just a bit about me and my journey as a therapist.

A few facts you may now know

🌿I qualified as a Level 3 massage therapist in 2019 and then set up 2 businesses - one in Somerset and one in Dorset

🌿 In 2022 I decided to put all my work and focus on my business in Crewkerne and sadly closed my lovely clinic in Dorset.

🌿 Working purely from Crewkerne clinic I am enjoying walking to work and looking after my local clients

🌿 Life can have its challenges up and down and turning corners, but it will often make you stronger and more determined.

Enjoy your week and thank you for your continued support

Who am I to be training you?

I wanted to let you know a bit about me and why I decided to start my journey into teaching.
After learning massage myself, 6 years ago, I realised how powerful the benefits can be and how I was truly making a difference to people’s lives and wellbeing.

My mission is now to deliver inspiring practical training that enhances therapists skills, encourages effective practice and promotes excellence in holistic care

There are many courses out there which are either online or a quick one day’er. I have been on some of these course myself and although most them are fully accredited, I still don’t feel one day is enough to fully grasp a new skill which you, as a therapist, can start offering to clients the very next day.
I want to make sure my students feel confident and ready to use their new skills and also promote them to their followers and clients from day 1. This is why my courses will be mainly 2 days with limited spaces of 4 people per course…..with plenty of time to practice.

Next course is
Thai Foot Massage 11th and 12th October 2025.

“Do you keep an eye on this mole on your back?”

I sometimes spot moles and marks on my client’s skin. Please do not be offended if I mention this to you during a treatment.

Many people I see live on their own and often don’t have anyone looking at their back or other part of their body to spot any changes to skin, moles marks etc. So, I could be the person spotting a mark which looks suspicious and by mentioning it could help detect skin cancer at an early stage.

▪ Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK. Most skin cancers can be cured if detected early.

▪ Melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer. The new mark may look like a mole, a flesh-coloured bump, a flaky, raised coloured patch or a spot that will not go away.

▪ About once a month check your skin for moles or marks that are changing or new. In adults, about 70% of melanoma cases are not associated with existing moles but form as new marks on the skin.

Of course another important mention is to keep putting on the SPF cream...… even in the colder months! 🙏 SPF protection also helps maintain healthy and firm skin, surely that's worth it isn't it?

👉 For more information about skin health in many ways, look up British Skin Foundation website which has masses of useful information and guides how to check your skin and what to look out for.

Well, this is very interesting information 😊

Well, this is very interesting information 😊

The debate always seems to be gentle therapy or deep tissue treatments. Certainly the EMMETT technique can be classed as gentle and can be such a surprise for many new clients when finger tip touch can bring such quick results.

There are scientific studies and neuroscience-based insights that support the idea that gentle touch can be more effective—or at least more appropriate—than deep pressure, particularly in contexts like chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and nervous system regulation. Here are some key references and concepts to back this up:

🧠 1.
Gate Control Theory of Pain

Melzack & Wall (1965)
This foundational theory explains that non-painful input (like soft touch) can “close the gate” to painful input in the spinal cord, blocking pain sensations from reaching the brain.
Deep pressure can sometimes stimulate nociceptors (pain receptors), opening the gate instead.

🌿 2.
C-Tactile (CT) Afferents – Nerves That Respond to Gentle Touch
Studies have identified a type of nerve fiber—C-tactile afferents—that responds specifically to slow, gentle, pleasant touch and sends soothing signals to the brain. These signals help regulate the emotional and pain-processing areas of the brain.

DOI: 10.1038/nn.2312

💥 3.
Central Sensitization in Chronic Pain
In conditions like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, the nervous system is sensitized and overreacts to pressure. Deep pressure may worsen symptoms, while gentle, non-threatening input can help regulate and calm the system.

DOI: 10.2174/157339707781386194

🧘 4.
Touch and the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Gentle touch has been shown to stimulate the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) system, which helps the body calm down, reduce pain, and enter healing states.

DOI: 10.1016/j.dr.2011.01.001

🧩 Summary
Gentle touch communicates safety and comfort to the nervous system.
It’s more suitable for pain-sensitive or trauma-affected bodies.
It’s backed by both neuroscience and clinical research.

Holistic Massage in Crewkerne

My name is Puk Johansen and I live with my family in Crewkerne. I am fully qualified ITEC Level 3 Massage Therapist. I offer a range of holistic massage treatments from my home. My treatments are based on the individual client to ensure full relaxation and therapeutic result.

In 2006 I was diagnosed with Lymphoedema after surgery and treatment for breast cancer. Learning to live with the complications of Lymphoedema made me explore available treatment and how I can help other people in my situation. The Manual Lymph Draining Massage can only be carried out by fully qualified massage therapists, which lead me to completing the ITEC Level 3 training and I found a real passion for it. I now offer a number of other diploma treatments such as Indian Head Massage, Natural Face Lift Massage and Myofascial Release.

It gives me such pleasure to provide a very holistic and personal treatment to every client. If you have any questions about any of the treatments I offer, please get in touch.
