If your mind won’t switch off at night, it’s not always about ‘relaxing more’.

You lie in bed trying to get comfortable…
turning over, fluffing the pillow, closing your eyes again…

but your mind won’t stop.

It replays conversations.

Things you wish you’d said differently.
What you need to do tomorrow.

Or it just keeps going for no clear reason at all.
Some things can help in the moment:

• writing things down to get them out of your head
• noticing what keeps coming up rather than pushing it away
• reducing stimulation before bed (phones, TV etc)
• getting up for a bit if you’re wide awake, instead of forcing sleep
• slowing your breathing so your body has a chance to settle

But if the same thoughts keep coming back…
night after night…
it’s often not just about sleep.

It can be your mind trying to process something

that hasn’t quite settled yet.
You can understand something logically…
Yet still feel stuck in it.

That’s often the frustrating part.

Late winter can be a strange time emotionally.

The new year energy has faded and the days are grey.
Rain can make it harder to get outside and motivation can dip.
Things you’ve been holding together start to feel heavier!

If this time of year feels harder for you, you’re not alone. It's common to notice a shift in mood around now.

A few gentle ways to support yourself during this period:

• If getting outside feels difficult, aim for small moments of daylight ☀️🌞
Even standing by an open door, a short walk between showers, or sitting by a window with a warm drink

• Keep your days lightly structured rather than trying to feel motivated.
Simple anchors like getting up, eating at regular times, or a short task can help create a sense of steadiness 🍽

• Stay connected in ways that feel manageable a message, a short call, or seeing someone without needing to “be your best self” ☎️

• Notice when you’re pushing yourself too hard this time of year often calls for a slightly gentler pace rather than trying to keep up with expectations

• Break things down more than you think you need to 📝starting something small often matters more than finishing something big

Sometimes it’s not about doing more, but about adjusting your expectations and being a bit more understanding towards yourself.

If things have been building up for a while, counselling can offer a space to talk things through and feel more grounded again.
