Trying to conceive can be emotional and stressful, and many people look for ways to support their wellbeing alongside medical care. I first came across Bowen during my own difficult fertility journey, and after the birth of my daughter was inspired to train as a practitioner and help others.

Bowen therapy focuses on helping the body relax and reset. During times of stress, the nervous system can remain in a constant state of tension, potentially impacting sleep, digestion, hormone balance, and overall wellbeing.

I have worked with many clients seeking support during this time, as Bowen can help with:
• aligning and balancing the pelvis, allowing the internal organs to settle, creating the flow and space for pregnancy to happen
• relaxation and stress reduction
• improving sleep
• easing physical tension
• supporting emotional wellbeing

While Bowen therapy is not a treatment for infertility, some people find it to be a calming and supportive addition during their fertility journey, so do get in touch if you are currently on this path.

If you suffer from IBS or other stress-related digestive issues, you will almost certainly have noticed that your symptoms worsen during periods of anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional pressure. This is because the gut and nervous system are closely connected.

Bowen therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that aims to support relaxation and help calm the nervous system. By encouraging the body to shift out of “fight or flight” mode, many clients report improvements in:
• abdominal tension
• bloating
• digestive discomfort
• stress levels
• overall sense of wellbeing

While Bowen therapy is not a cure for IBS or a replacement for medical care, it may offer supportive relief alongside advice from your healthcare professional.

Do you have a teenager who is currently feeling overwhelmed with exams, or long hours at school. Couple this with sports, screens, disrupted sleep, anxiety, growing pains, and there is a lot for young bodies and minds to carry.

Because Bowen is so gentle, it can be a great option for teens who may feel anxious about stronger hands-on treatments.

Young people can often really benefit from some space to slow down and breathe. For 13-15 year olds I offer a 45 minute session for £30. These can be booked on-line in both Oban and Crieff.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the perfect time to remind ourselves that stress doesn’t just affect the mind, but it is carried by the body as well. This can manifest as tight shoulders, headaches, jaw tension, poor sleep, or feeling constantly tired but unable to unwind.

So many people are living in a state of stress overload without even realising how much their nervous system is holding onto.

One of the things I find most powerful about Bowen Therapy is its subtleness, and the pauses which give the body time to slow down, reset and move out of the constant fight-or-flight state.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply give ourselves permission to stop, breathe and receive support. If you have been feeling the effects of stress then do get in touch, or book an appointment on-line in either my Crieff or Oban clinics.

An article in The Guardian last week shared findings that a common knee surgery for cartilage damage may offer no real benefit, and in some cases, outcomes may even be worse over time.

This serves as a useful reminder that pain doesn’t always equal damage, and indeed where you feel pain isn’t always the source.

Knee pain, for example, can be influenced by:
• Hip alignment and pelvic balance
• Foot mechanics and how you walk
• Tension patterns in muscles and fascia
• Old injuries that have changed movement over time

By focussing on the knee, we can miss the bigger picture. And this is where Bowen therapy takes a different, and more gentle approach, working with the body to:
• Release tension
• Improve alignment
• Restore more natural movement patterns

Many of my clients find that pain begins to ease, even in areas that haven’t been directly treated. So if you’ve been told cartilage surgery is your only option, it may be worth exploring a more holistic approach first.

Do book an appointment in either my Crieff or Oban clinic – these are available to book on-line.

Hip pain isn’t always what it seems.

Many people assume the cause of the pain comes directly from the joint itself, but often, it stems from somewhere else entirely:

• Imbalances in the lower back or pelvis
• Tightness in surrounding muscles (like glutes or hip flexors)
• Old injuries that have changed how you move
• Poor posture or prolonged sitting
• Tension in the feet or knees affecting alignment

Because the body works as a whole, discomfort in the hip can also ripple outwards:
You might notice:
• Lower back pain
• Knee discomfort
• Tight hamstrings
• Reduced mobility or stiffness when walking
• Changes in posture or gait

This is where Bowen can be so effective, working with the body as an integrated system, using gentle, precise movements to encourage realignment, release tension, and support the body’s natural healing response.

Recent data from Sport England shows that over 30 million adults in England are now meeting recommended activity levels. More walking, more running, more classes – we’re moving more than ever, but with that can come issues that aren’t receiving the same attention.

More people are dealing with:
• Persistent tightness that doesn’t go away
• Niggles that come and go, so are easy to ignore
• Fatigue that builds up over time
• Small imbalances that often turn into bigger issues

Bowen can be very effective in these instances, working with your body to:
• Release tension patterns
• Support alignment and movement
• Encourage recovery and reset the nervous system
• Help your body adapt to increased activity

If you’ve recently become more active and your body is starting to feel it, do get in touch.

Are you feeling inspired to take up running after watching the London Marathon this weekend? Hundreds of thousands of people will apply for a place for next year over the coming days.

But before you go from sofa to 26.2 miles, your body might need a little support along the way. Running is incredible for your physical and mental health, but it’s also repetitive, high-impact, and demanding on muscles, joints, and connective tissue. That’s where Bowen therapy can make a real difference.

Bowen:
• Helps improve recovery between training sessions
• Supports muscle balance and alignment
• Encourages better posture and movement efficiency
• Assists in reducing tension and preventing overuse injuries
• Promotes relaxation (key for performance and recovery)

If you’re starting out:
• Build gradually -avoid doing too much, too soon
• Listen to niggles early (they’re often warning signs, not something to push through)
• Prioritise rest and recovery as much as training
• Ensure you have proper footwear
• Stay consistent rather than intense

Training for endurance events needs to be done steadily, and supporting your body from the start can make all the difference in how you feel, perform, and stay injury-free.

Chronic back pain is rarely just about your back. It’s something I talk about a lot in clinic, because so many people come in feeling frustrated – after trying stretches, new chairs, pain relief, they are still no further forward.

But ongoing back pain can be linked to:
• long periods of sitting or repetitive movement
• old injuries your body has adapted around
• muscle tension and postural habits
• stress and a constantly “switched on” nervous system

Often, it’s a combination of the above, and trying to fix the ‘sore spot’ rarely brings lasting relief.

Which is why Bowen can be so effective. Rather than working on the area of pain alone, it works with the body as a whole, helping to release tension patterns, calm the nervous system, and support better overall balance. When the body feels safe, it’s much more able to let go of the holding patterns that contribute to discomfort.

Do get in touch to make an appointment if you have back pain that isn’t responding to what you have tried.

There seems to have been a shift over the last few months, with more and more people stepping away from the idea that healing has to be intense, fast, or uncomfortable to be effective.

Instead I feel we’re seeing a return to something simpler:

🌿 Slowing down
🌿 Spending time in nature
🌿 Choosing gentler, more supportive ways to care for the body

It makes a huge amount of sense - when your body has been living in a state of stress for a long time, pushing it harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes what it actually needs is the opposite.

A chance to feel safe.
A chance to pause.
A chance to reset.

This is where gentle therapies like Bowen come in.

Rather than forcing change, Bowen works with your body, giving your nervous system the space it needs to shift out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and repair.” For many of my clients it’s the first time they’ve truly felt their body relax in a long while.

We’re starting to understand something important about stress – it’s not just in your head, it lives in your body too.

Chronic stress can show up as tension, pain, fatigue, poor sleep, and digestive issues… and for many, it becomes a normal way of living.

Emotional trauma can often contribute to chronic stress in the body. Many women, in particular, hold this tension physically in their muscles. Experiences such as traumatic childbirth can be a factor—something that is often described as common, but that doesn’t mean it should be dismissed or accepted as something you simply have to live with.

Your body was never designed to stay in a constant state of overwhelm. This is where Bowen can help. It works with your nervous system to support a shift out of stress mode, helping your body to rest, reset, and rebalance.

If you feel that chronic stress may be contributing to physical symptoms, please do get in touch.
