Your child will learn things at their own pace. Helping them have the physical, social and emotional skills to cope with the new experiences they will have as they grow is important. Children learn best by playing and having fun with family and friends.

πŸ“š Story time and counting games are a great way to build their concentration span.
πŸ“š Sharing books together is good for children. It helps with speech development and learning to concentrate.
πŸ“š Look at books – read the words or talk about what you can see – children often like to look at the same book over and over. They like the repetition and learn language effectively this way.
πŸ“šTry a trip to the library and let them choose which books to borrow, this might introduce a little variety. Don’t be surprised when they return to their old favourite!

Storytelling encourages imagination, memory, and conversation skills, as children start to retell parts of the story in their own words, join in with familiar phrases, or create their own little stories inspired by the book.

Sharing books together is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your child’s speech and language development.

Young children learn language best through everyday moments with you, when you’re playing, reading, chatting, and singing together. By slowing down, tuning into what interests your child, and using simple words and phrases, you can help build their understanding and confidence in a fun, relaxed way.

Here are some easy ideas you can use with younger children during your daily routines and playtime:

πŸ“š Look at books together. Don't worry about saying every word, but watch and wait to see what your child is interested in, and talk about that.
πŸ“š Talk about what you have done together using simple phrases eg 'first we got dressed, then we had breakfast, then we went on the bus.'
πŸ“š Watch what your child does when they play, and use simple phrases to comment on what they are doing eg 'lion says roar,' 'car is fast!
πŸ“š Sing nursery rhymes, they are little stories that are easy to learn and remember. Doing the actions helps children to learn the words.
