Karen and I have just spent a couple of days putting up Christmas decorations, feeling festive and looking forward to spending time with friends and family. Towards the end of the day I received an email asking me to conduct a funeral service 3 days before Christmas, my 34th service this year.
It made me think, and perhaps get a little melancholy. After each of those services, I have returned home and it has been back to life just as it was before, but for the families I have just been with, life will never be quite the same again. An integral part of their lives is now missing, and this will be their first Christmas without someone very dear to them.
We may spend our entire lives thinking about all kinds of things that are important to us, but what my two years as a funeral celebrant have taught me is that ultimately it is the love of those we hold dear that matters most.
So this Christmas, cherish those you love, (even with their annoying habits!), and be thankful you still have them. Perhaps we can all show some extra support and compassion for anyone we know who will be spending a first Christmas, (or even another Christmas) without a loved one.
Sending best wishes for this Festive Season, and The New Year.
