Most people think Reiki is just about relaxation and yes… people often leave a session feeling calmer, lighter, clearer or deeply rested. What many people don’t realise though, is why that happens.
The nervous system is designed to keep us alive.
When we’ve been under prolonged stress, grief, pressure, trauma, overstimulation or emotional strain, the body shifts into protection mode. It begins scanning for danger rather than rest.
This is an ancient survival response.
Your body doesn’t know the difference between a charging bear and months or years of emotional stress, burnout, overwhelm, people pleasing, poor sleep or constantly carrying too much.
So instead of repairing and restoring, the body stays alert.
This can show up as:
• anxiety or overwhelm
• exhaustion that rest doesn’t fix
• brain fog
• shallow breathing
• emotional numbness
• tension held in the body
• feeling disconnected from yourself
• difficulty slowing down even when you’re desperate to rest
This is one of the reasons Reiki and energy healing can feel so profound.
The body responds to safety.
When the nervous system begins to settle, the breath softens. The muscles relax. Emotions sometimes rise to the surface. The body finally gets the message that it no longer has to brace itself quite so tightly.
After many years of this work, I’ve learned that so many people are carrying far more than anyone realises. They are functioning… but they are depleted.
Sometimes what changes people most is having a space where they can simply stop holding everything for a while.
A space where they can breathe, soften and reconnect with themselves again.
This is the work I hold people through every week in my Reiki sessions. I offer deep, compassionate support for the mind, body and nervous system.
If this resonates, my door is open.
