Understanding the Root Causes: Chronic Health Conditions in Autistic Adolescents and Adults
A recent study published in Molecular Autism reveals a crucial finding: autistic individuals face significantly higher rates of chronic physical health conditions across all major organ systems. This includes cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal issues, and more. š«š§
As a functional medicine psychiatrist, I believe it's essential to look beyond the symptoms and understand the underlying causes contributing to these health challenges. Hereās why a functional medicine approach is vital:
Holistic View: Functional medicine looks at the body as an interconnected system. By understanding how various organ systems interact, we can identify root causes of chronic conditions often overlooked in medicine.
Personalized Care: Every individual is unique. Functional medicine emphasizes personalized treatment plans that consider genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors specific to each autistic individual.
Proactive Management: Instead of just treating symptoms, functional medicine aims to prevent and manage chronic conditions through diet, lifestyle changes, and natural interventions. This proactive approach is particularly beneficial for managing the complex health profiles of autistic individuals.
Comprehensive Health Assessments: Regular, in-depth health assessments can help detect early signs of chronic conditions, allowing for timely interventions that can improve overall health and quality of life.
Let's work towards a healthcare model that addresses the root causes of health issues, providing autistic individuals with the comprehensive care they deserve. šæš”

So happy you two are raising awareness of the importance of screening for sleep apnea in adults (and kids) with Down syndrome!
Often my adult patients are struggling with a variety of issues- and not always sleepiness- and treating the apnea improves their symptoms greatly.
Over 80% of children with DS have sleep issues, and not all apnoea. Again there can be often no clues to sleep disordered breathing in kids with DS so we must be vigilant to screen for sleep issues.
Here are mine and James Carter - Living Independently 's sleep apnea masks,
did you know that sleep apnea is very common in people with Down's Syndrome so please get your kids tested.

Hallmarks of a Functional Medicine approach include:
1.Patient-centred care. The focus of functional medicine is on patient-centred care, promoting health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease.
2. An integrative, science-based healthcare approach. Functional Medicine practitioners look āupstreamā to consider the complex web of interactions in the patientās history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.
3. Integrating best medical practices creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques and psychotherapy.
