🧠 What is dyslexia?

When dyslexia isn’t fully understood or identified, children can begin to doubt themselves — not because they aren’t capable, but because learning feels harder than it should. Over time, this can affect confidence, motivation, and how a child feels about school.

With the right understanding, things can change.

When we understand how a child learns, we can support them in ways that build confidence, ease frustration, and help them recognise their strengths, not just their challenges.

Understanding comes first. Confidence grows from there.

Top Tip from Jacqui – Does your child often lean on walls, furniture, or even you?

Jacqui, our Paediatric Occupational Therapist, shares it’s often a sign that a child is seeking proprioceptive input. 💚

Proprioception is our body’s sense of where we are in space. When children lean, push, or press into things, they may be trying to feel more grounded, stable, and regulated.

Here are some more of Jacqui’s top tips to support them:
✅ Offer “heavy work” activities
• Carrying books or cushions
• Pushing a laundry basket
• Animal walks (bear, crab, frog!)
• Wall push‑ups

These activities give deep pressure input that helps their body feel organised.

✅ Create a leaning-friendly space - A weighted cushion, body pillow, or beanbag can give the pressure their body craves — without overstretching joints.
✅ Add movement breaks - Short bursts of climbing, jumping, or pulling resistance bands can help keep their sensory system regulated throughout the day.
✅ Remember: A child isn’t being lazy or inattentive — their body is communicating what it needs to feel comfortable and regulated. 🌱

🐠 Why a simple fish game is actually a big deal for child development.
We used this colourful game in an OT session this week! It might look simple, but it offered so much more than just fun.

Behind the bright fish and arrows is a hidden workout for both the brain and the body. On the surface:

🎨 Matching colours and patterns builds visual processing skills
✋ Picking up pieces develops fine motor strength and coordination
🧠 Following directional cards supports sequencing and cognitive flexibility

But beneath the surface, those arrows and “move left/right” prompts are incredible for building a child’s sense of direction and body awareness (proprioception).
When children move their bodies based on visual cues, they aren’t just following instructions, they’re learning how to navigate their world with confidence.

These skills support reading, maths, emotional regulation, and everyday independence. In real life, that looks like:
➡️ More coordinated movement
⬆️ Safer navigation in their environments
⬅️ Increased independence in daily tasks

It’s amazing how something so simple can support so much growth.
we truly love how powerful play is! 🌱

Autism Acceptance means seeing, valuing, and supporting autistic people for who they are — not who the world expects them to be.

It’s about listening to autistic voices, embracing differences, and creating environments where every child feels understood, respected, and safe to thrive. 💚

Let’s keep choosing acceptance — today and every day.
