Our Patient Participation Group was formed in February 2010 and we are known as "The Patients' Group". We are a small, friendly group of patients who are all volunteers and our primary goal is to promote cooperation between the Practice and patients, and the aims are for discussions of general interest and which are of benefit to all patients and staff. We meet every few months and our meetings ar

e attended by Staff Representatives from the Surgery. Please take a look at our Patient Participation Group notice board which is permanently on display in the Waiting Room at the surgery, or find us on the surgery website. If you have any questions or concerns, we will be happy to raise them with the surgery. We will also welcome new members to The Patients' Group, so please contact me if you are interested and I would be more than happy to provide you with more information about our group. At our recent free Health Event, “What Can Crowthorne Do For You?”, Olga Zilberberg of The Missing Link gave a very interesting talk about the work that she does as a Facilitator at Bracknell and Wokingham Recovery Colleges.

Recovery Colleges offer a wide range of free courses to help people better understand and manage their mental health needs, recover and stay well.

They operate on a self-referral basis, focusing on the “student” rather than the “patient”, and create Personal Learning Plans that focus on what the “student” is interested in and needs.

Some of the workshops available include:

⭐️Managing Anxiety,

⭐️ Depression,

⭐️ Trauma,

⭐️ PTSD,

⭐️ Autism,

⭐️ ADHD,

⭐️ Managing Low Mood,

⭐️ Coping With Stress,

⭐️ Being Kind To Ourselves,

⭐️ Understanding Emotions,

⭐️ Improving Self-Esteem

As well as Wellbeing courses that focus on:

⭐️ Food and Mood,

⭐️ Confidence,

⭐️ Vision Boards,

And Creative courses such as

⭐️ Art,

⭐️ Craft,

⭐️ Signing,

⭐️ Yoga and

⭐️ Nature Walks.

On Tuesday, 8th April 2025, New Wokingham Road Surgery PPG hosted their 5th Health Event at the Morgan Centre, in Crowthorne.

The event was entitled “What Can Crowthorne Do For You? Check Out Your Health And Wellbeing”.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness on the many charities, organisations, and clubs available to us in the local community, that we may be unaware of, or not heard of before.

As there are times in our lives when we need someone to talk to for extra support, but we might not know where to turn to or whom to ask for help, especially if transport is a problem.

Living in a village that is split between two parishes and the two local Borough Councils, understanding what are the available community resources is crucial for both physical and mental wellbeing.

The evening was organised into a marketplace – style Health and Wellbeing intervention, bringing together local organisations that offer services to Crowthorne, Wokingham and Sandhurst residents, with each providing a 10-minute presentation about their work.

Organisations arranged their promotional booths, allowing the public to explore, engage in conversations, and collect information along with free giveaways.

Refreshments, such as tea and coffee were provided during the evening.

The second part of the evening was dedicated to the visiting organisations and their services delivering approximately ten-minute presentations, showcasing their work and explaining how public can access them.

The event also provided a great opportunity for all the professionals to network together too.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of early detection and prevention of colon cancer.
Colon cancer is a significant health concern, but with regular screenings and awareness of symptoms, it is often preventable and treatable.

Facts:

- Regular screenings can identify precancerous polyps, allowing for removal before they develop into cancer.
- Be aware of changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.
- A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along with regular exercise, can reduce the risk of colon cancer.

So, what you can do?

- Wear Blue: Join the "Dress in Blue Day" on the first Friday of March to show support and raise awareness.
- Use social media to spread the word about the importance of screenings and healthy habits.
- Consider donating to organisations dedicated to colon cancer research and patient support.

By participating in Colon Cancer Awareness Month you can work together to reduce the impact of this disease and support those affected.

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in the UK, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of early detection and supporting those affected by this disease.

Each year, approximately 7,500 women in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, yet only 3 in 10 survive beyond a decade.

Early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes, making awareness of symptoms crucial.

Common Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer:

Persistent bloating
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
Changes in urinary habits
Fatigue
Unexplained weight loss or gain

Recognizing these symptoms and consulting a healthcare professional promptly can lead to earlier detection and better treatment outcomes.
So, we encourage you to participate in the "Walk in Her Name" Challenge:

Commit to walking 100km throughout March to raise vital funds for ovarian cancer research. Your steps can lead to breakthroughs in treatment and support for those affected.

Your participation and support are vital in transforming outcomes and offering hope to countless women and their families!

🌍 On , we’re joining the global call to improve !

Last Thursday, we teamed up with Healthwatch Reading for a event, bringing 50+ community leaders, members, healthcare professionals and services together to tackle patient safety risks from language barriers.

We heard powerful stories on how the lack of interpreter services impacts care and safety. There's still much work for local services to do now and in the future.

Our efforts continue to get your voices heard and hold services accountable to help improve patient safety and accessibility for everyone's needs.
