EM Therapies is a small Crowthorne based Complementary Therapies Business aiming to improve people's wellbeing through targeted Massage Therapy & Aromatherapy. Hi I'm Elise and I run CROEN Therapy & CROEN Essentials essentials

I am professional complementary therapist, focusing on improving people's wellbeing through Therapeutic Massage and Aromatherapy. I also run professional & natural product workshops Essentials, passing on the knowledge and skills needed for you to make a number of quality natural beauty products and more. A little about me: I’m a graduate Chemist who had a long career in the Pharmaceutical / Health Care industries. In 2016, my life changed I embarked on a charity cycling challenge (London to Paris) allowing me to see the benefit of regular massage leading me to retrain as a Massage Therapist. Then another change, in 2019 I moved to Singapore, unable to work, I trained to be an Aromatherapist and started experimenting in making natural beauty & household products. Fully qualified & insured in the services I offer. My focus is treating my clients naturally, holistically and safely. Other than that, I believe in regular movement more than exercise, drinking water, getting fresh air & plenty of sleep. I love to travel and I am lucky to be a dog mum to Tico x

Great news, research has found that exercise can be more effective at helping to improve mental health over drugs.
Clearly, some people need additional help but an active lifestyle will help some of us.

Exercise intervention that lasts 12 weeks or less appears to be most effective at reducing mental health symptoms, especially for those suffering from anxiety and depression. Higher-intensity exercise proved more beneficial in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression than longer-duration programs...

10 reasons to take up cycling. For me it’s been about the company, fresh air, exercise, headspace, freedom, scenery, adventure, friends, challenge and the coffee shop stop.

If you are a women and would like to find a group, I really recommend checking out Breeze rides run by British Cycling. For mixed rides, British Cycling has a variety of rides available for you to join, look for a local cycling group or a Flab group in your area.

You don’t need all the gear - trainers, leggings, t-shirt and a rain jacket (plus helmet) are sufficient together with a bike. But you’ll soon add cycling gloves and shorts to make your ride more comfortable (and then it grows from there 😂).

A second article this week I’ve come across concerning arthritis. New guidance for the NHS is suggesting exercise to help ease symptoms.

As always before starting an exercise plan speak to your healthcare provider.

Exercise should be considered as a core treatment for those suffering from arthritis caused by wear-and-tear.

Just a short post forward about arthritis…..hope it can help some of you.

Many view arthritis as an inevitable. There's no sure way to prevent arthritis, but you may have more control over your joint health than you think.

Hi, I just read an interesting article on Blue Zones and the things we can do for a longer & healthier life.
I don’t think there is anything new but it serves as a nice reminder….interestingly only 20% of your genes determine how long you live, 80% is lifestyle.
The article reminds us:
- Eat a Mediterranean diet, high in fruit & veg. low in saturated fat and meats. Locally sourced is considered better if you can get it (& a couple of glasses of wine are fine).
- Active life style, no need to be a gym bunny just move more as part of your daily activities.
- Sleep, if you struggle with getting a good night’s sleep it may be worth getting some help in addressing this as sleep is so important to health.
- Good relationships / sense of purpose.

Let me know what you think….😊

Blue Zones are pockets of the world where the chances of living longer are significantly higher, and there’s a lot we can learn from their inhabitants.

This article looks at the benefits of yoga in the workplace.

One thing I hear that puts people off yoga is the expectation that you need to be bendy. This is not true, we all have different levels of flexibility and yoga should be seen as your own practice. Sure some people can touch their toes or even get their head on the floor but it’s not about comparing yourself. I have a sense of quiet satisfaction when suddenly I can do something I had not previously been able to do 😊.

Another thing that puts people off is the more spiritual side of some practices, chanting or a lot of breathe work. Some people like this, others (myself included) don’t. So try different styles and teachers to find a class you do enjoy. There are so many different styles available.

For me, I have considered yoga a form of ‘medicine’, following a shoulder injury many years ago I found that if I didn’t regularly stretch the area then it quickly became achy. A weekly Yoga / Pilates class helped. Further, as I age I find the added benefits in strength building & working on my balance. As I’m not a fan of gyms 😂

So, I know firstly from personal experience (and secondly through the knowledge gained during my massage training) that low impact exercise is good for your joints. It can also help to reduce joint pain.

My experience comes after a shoulder dislocation accident many years ago. My shoulder pain was eased by keeping the area mobile and by maintaining the muscle strength. Initially I was diligent about exercising this area but after a while I stopped only to find an achy dull pain return. I personally found that regular yoga or Pilates sessions helped me better manage the situation and still do classes today, many years on. I consider these my medicine.

But maybe yoga/Pilates is not for you. Consider what exercise/movement you do enjoy that could help. I say movement here as the key is to keep the area around the joint flexible and strong.

If you’d like to read more on the topic, here’s an article I found…

Regular physical activity is crucial for protecting healthy joints and even for relieving joint pain. Here are the best exercises for joints.

Another interesting article talking about the need for movement and weight management in managing arthritis.

🎋Moving our joints increases the production of synovial fluid, a natural joint lubricant.
🎋Movement helps to maintain muscle tone, the muscles are responsible for moving and stabilising our joints.
🎋The impact we get from many exercises such as walking helps to make our bones stronger. If outside, vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium a key mineral for our bone health.

Hello, I’ve not posted for a long time from this group, if you are still there great. I saw this interesting article about knee pain and thought I’d share. Obviously I would like to be able to help in person but as I’m still in Singapore that is not practical 😊

Many people over 50 have to undergo knee surgery or knee replacement surgery. We can reduce the chances of knee injuries in later life with a healthy lifestyle.
