We're halfway through Aromatherapy Awareness Week, and I'm moving up the 'scale' of fragrance notes, from base to middle. Where base notes are the bedrock of a blend, holding the higher notes and making the whole aroma last longer, middle notes are the 'heart'.
A fabulously versatile essential oil middle note is geranium, Pelargonium graveolens. Not the showy kind of geraniums we grow in pots, but the scented leaf variety with tiny flowers that you can see behind the sprig of lavender in the picture. The finest geranium oil is said to hail from the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, and is often referred to as Geranium Bourbon after the former name of that island.
It has a beautiful floral, rich, sweet, rosy aroma, but also shows green and citrus notes that make it such an easy oil to blend with. Geranium works well with herbs like lavender, chamomile or rosemary; citrus oils like mandarin, sweet orange or lemon; spices like ginger and coriander; and even the deep woods and resins such as frankincense, sandalwood or patchouli. In fact, it's hard to find an oil that geranium doesn't work with...
The effects are balancing and harmonising to mind, moods, skin, and female hormones. It has the ability to uplift yet relax at the same time, which is often how we want to feel.
In summary, geranium essential oil is definitely one you should have in your Aromatherapy toolkit! If you'd like a personalised blend or Room Fragrance spray based around geranium, contact me and we'll create something beautiful!
