It's a long piece but fascinating, showing how essential oils could fill some of the gaps caused by our growing resistance to antibiotics. After all, plants make them to fight bacteria!

"The fact that essential oils can kill bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is amazing in itself. The fact that they can sometimes reverse antibiotic resistance in bacteria is seemingly miraculous."

After such a beautiful, bright Autumn, it seems particularly hard to get used to the darker evenings and shorter days now that the clocks have changed.

At this time of year the citrus family oils can be such a delight, especially the 'warmer' citrus aromas like sweet orange and mandarin.

They bring a sense of lightness, uplift and energy as well as being familiar and comforting. They're also such good mixers, blending beautifully with invigorating herbal oils, rich woods or warm spices. You'll find the classic pairing of sweet orange and cinnamon in lots of seasonal fragrances. It's rightly popular, combining the warm spiciness of cinnamon leaf with the sweet yet sharp tang of orange, perfect to raise the spirits on dull days, and also antibacterial to combat winter bugs.

So if you're missing the sun, try bringing some cheer into your day with your favourite sweet citrus! ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŠ

Warning - other bugs are available...๐Ÿงซ!

Our focus has been on Covid for so long that we may have forgotten other respiratory bugs are always around. And Autumn is here, the season when we start to see colds, sore throats and sniffles spreading as we spend more time indoors together.

Essential oils are an easy, natural and truly effective way to keep the air in our homes and workplaces germ free. Choose from single oils known for their anti-microbial properties like Eucalyptus, Pine, Ravansara, Frankincense, Lemon, or a blend of your favourites. Then use them in a room spray or a diffuser to reach every corner and begin their work.

Remember to keep the space ventilated, and take advice before using oils around young children or animals.

Stay healthy and well into the Winter!

Essential oils have the potential to change our mood. They can relax us, energise us, make us more focused or help us sleep better. They can even take us back to a distant memory - like how a certain perfume can remind you of the first time you fell in love.

We're halfway through Aromatherapy Awareness Week, and I'm moving up the 'scale' of fragrance notes, from base to middle. Where base notes are the bedrock of a blend, holding the higher notes and making the whole aroma last longer, middle notes are the 'heart'.

A fabulously versatile essential oil middle note is geranium, Pelargonium graveolens. Not the showy kind of geraniums we grow in pots, but the scented leaf variety with tiny flowers that you can see behind the sprig of lavender in the picture. The finest geranium oil is said to hail from the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean, and is often referred to as Geranium Bourbon after the former name of that island.

It has a beautiful floral, rich, sweet, rosy aroma, but also shows green and citrus notes that make it such an easy oil to blend with. Geranium works well with herbs like lavender, chamomile or rosemary; citrus oils like mandarin, sweet orange or lemon; spices like ginger and coriander; and even the deep woods and resins such as frankincense, sandalwood or patchouli. In fact, it's hard to find an oil that geranium doesn't work with...

The effects are balancing and harmonising to mind, moods, skin, and female hormones. It has the ability to uplift yet relax at the same time, which is often how we want to feel.

In summary, geranium essential oil is definitely one you should have in your Aromatherapy toolkit! If you'd like a personalised blend or Room Fragrance spray based around geranium, contact me and we'll create something beautiful!

It's Aromatherapy Awareness Week, a chance to celebrate all things aromatherapy and essential oils! I'm staying with the deeper aromas for today's essential oil - it's patchouli, Pogostemon cablin. Those among us of a certain age may remember its warm spicy aroma from little boutiques selling cheesecloth smocks and Afghan coats, and it was often used to mask the strong smell of ma*****na... Interesting to note that it first reached England in the 1800's when the ground, dried leaves were sprinkled over bolts of fashionable paisley cotton and other textiles from India to prevent insect damage on the long journey by ship.

The fragrance is rich, sweet, herbaceus, earthy and woody, and it is possibly the longest lasting essential oil. Your home, towels and bedding will be subtly scented for days after using a massage or bath oil containing patchouli!

It is best loved for its effects on the mind and emotions, exerting a calming effect on anxiety, stress and irritability, yet without being a depressant. But it has also been shown to have strong in-vitro antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects against many strains of pathogens.

I would recommend it as the supreme essential oil for grounding and stability. It can help to reconnect a scattered mind, and bring you back home to your body and its pleasures when you've been spending too much time in your head.

Try it with citrus oils to give depth and body to the mix, or with beautiful florals like rose or jasmine for a totally indulgent blend.

This post is a little late in the day for the first day of Aromatherapy Awareness Week 2021! But never mind, better late...

Quite fittingly for this time in the evening I'd like to focus on Vetivert essential oil, as it's possibly THE number one oil to switch off a busy mind and prepare for sleep. The deep amber oil is extracted by ditillation from the roots of the grass-like plant Vetiveria zizanioides, native to India but grown in Java, Brazil, the Seychelles Japan and Haiti. It has a deep, rich, smoky aroma which can be almost overwhelming when sampled undiluted, but transforms into the most beautiful earthy base note when mixed with other oils. The aroma will linger for over 24 hours. It is invaluable in blends for relaxation, anxiety, exhaustion and burnout. It is grounding and cooling, and is also recommended for its balancing action around perimenopause.

Try mixing it with lavender for the ultimate sleep blend, or with geranium and clary sage to ease the hormonal swings leading up to the menopause. And contact me for more information, or your personalised blend!

Are you missing your Aromatherapy massages and other Touch Therapies? Although we have a proposed date of April 12th for hands on treatments to resume, it's not for another 5 weeks!
BUT did you know that using touch therapy for yourself, or watching others perform massage, activates the same parts of the brain and releases the same neurotransmitters as if you were actually being massaged. That's oxytocin, the love and connection hormone and serotonin, the mood stabiliser. The power of touch is so amazing, even through a screen!

So until then, I have put together some online Self Care sessions designed to focus on specific areas of the body that commonly cause discomfort and stiffness, especially at the moment.
And here's the first one -
Keeping Your Neck and Shoulders Flexible and Pain Free
Wednesday March 10th at 2pm via Zoom - ยฃ15
Each workshop will last for around 30/40 minutes and will include:-
~ self massage skills
~ pressure point work
~ stretches
~ energy techniques eg. Qi Gong, tapping
~ breath work
~ mindfulness/meditation/visualisation
You will feel the changes straight away, and will also build up your own library of skills and techniques - lasting resources to restore your physical ease and emotional balance whenever you need.

Future sessions are as follows:-
Wednesday March 17th - Ease Your Lower Back and Hips
Wednesday March 24th - Happier Hands, Wrists and Arms
Wednesday March 31st - Help for headaches, tired eyes, aching jaw

Each session is ยฃ15, but you can book all 4 for ยฃ50. Message me in the comments below for booking details or to find out more.
