This week is National Mental Health Awareness Week, and in this year of 2021 it may be more significant for many of us than ever before. As a society, as a country, as a WORLD, we have never experienced anything like the Covid-19 pandemic of the last year.

We've experienceed anxiety, fear, change, loss, anger, disruption; and possibly without the consolation of one of our most important senses - touch. If you live alone, you may not have been allowed to hug or touch family, friends or lovers. If you share a living space, you may still be missing those gentle, loving touches from your extended friendship circle - on a hand, an arm, a shoulder, to express care, consolation and love. Remember the Queen standing stoically alone at Prince Phillip's funeral? I think many of us instinctively felt we wanted to reach out and hug her.

Research shows that touch calms and reassures by activating the Vagus nerve - part of the parasympathetic nervous system that controls rest, relaxation and repair. Touch reduces cardiovascular ill health, and boosts immunity. It also triggers the release of serotonin and oxytocin, the feelgood and bonding hormones, while reducing cortisol, the main stress chemical. Gentle, wanted touch creates feelings of safety and security, exactly what we need now!

As a holistic therapist who usually gives hands-on therapies most days of the year, I have felt a huge loss, and realise that providing touch also gives me touch. Research is beginning to confirm that giving intentional touch brings very similar benefits to reciving touch, so I've been delighted to resume so-called 'close contact' work since April 12th, for my clients' wellbeing and my own.

The sense of touch is finally getting more recognition and serious research, as we realise what we have missed during lockdowns and times of social distancing. Thank goodness it will soon be legal to hug again...

Do your keyboard-weary hands and wrists need help?

If the answer is a big YES! there's still time to sign up for my online session this Wednesday - Happier Hands, Wrists and Arms.

Why? Over the last months, many of us have had a sudden pivot to much more online working, often in less than perfect setups, and with intensive use of keyboards and mice (mouses?) You'd think my arms and hands would be immune after years of massage, but such a change of muscle and joint usage is a perfect recipe for fatigue, discomfort or repetitive strain problems in the wrists and shoulders, even for me - so I'll be tackling these issues this week.

The workshop is £15, lasts for around 45 minutes and will include:-
~ self massage skills
~ pressure point work
~ stretches
~ energy techniques eg. Qi Gong, tapping
~ breath work
~ mindfulness/meditation/visualisation

And next week on Wednesday March 31st I'm running the last workshop in this series - Help for headaches, tired eyes, and aching jaw. Increased screen time can also be a cause of headaches and eyestrain, but the general pandemic related stresses we've all been experiencing are definitely responsible for more tension headaches and jaw clenching. I'll be sharing some great techniques to help release muscular tension in the scalp, jaw, neck and shoulders, and also to invigorate tired eyes.

And altough I've said it before, it bears repeating that using touch therapy on yourself, or watching others perform massage, activates the same parts of the brain and releases the same neurotransmitters as if you were actually being massaged! So that's oxytocin, the love and connection hormone and serotonin, the mood stabiliser. You can benefit from the power of touch through a screen until hands-on therapies are available again from April 12th...

Yes! we have a proposed date of April 12th for hands on treatments to resume, although Oh Dear! it's not for another 6 weeks! It feels so near and yet so far...

So in the meantime, I have put together some online Self Care sessions, designed to focus on specific areas of the body that commonly cause pain and stiffness, especially at the moment.
And here's the first one -

Keeping Your Neck and Shoulders Flexible and Pain Free
Wednesday March 10th at 2pm via Zoom - £15

Each workshop will last for around 30/40 minutes and will include:-
~ self massage skills
~ pressure point work
~ stretches
~ energy techniques eg. Qi Gong, tapping
~ breath work
~ mindfulness/meditation/visualisation

You will feel the changes straight away, and will also build up your own library of skills and techniques - lasting resources to restore your physical ease and emotional balance whenever you need.

Wishing a Happy New Year to all my dear clients and friends!

This last year has been a huge challenge to us all, with constant change, disruption and anxiety. I can't thank you all enough for your continued support and loyalty throughout all the lockdowns, re-openings and Tier changes. And although being in Tier 4 I am once again unable to give hands-on treatments, I look forward to the day when I can plump up the pillows, fluff up the blankets on my treatment table, warm the massage oil and open my doors to you again!

And in the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you need any help and self care advice for aching backs, hips, necks and shoulders, or if you're struggling with insomnia, worries or negative thoughts. I'm happy to see you via Zoom or chat on the phone - there's ALWAYS something we can do to help you feel better.
