The Health and Safety Executive builds support to protect trades' mental health.

April is stress awareness month, and the HSE Working Minds campaign, has recently welcomed 6 new partners across the construction industry to help reach trades and offer free mental health support.

Joining the campaign are:
🚧 The Asbestos Removal Contractors Association (ARCA)
🚧 The Contract Flooring Association (CFA)
🚧 The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE)
🚧 The Electrical Contractors Association (ECA)
🚧 The National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC)
🚧 The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC)

According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), workers in construction are now nearly four times more likely to die by su***de than in any other sector. That is a shocking figure by any standards.

This could be down to a variety of factors like long hours, extended periods away from home, financial stress caused by irregular working patterns, and a culture of toxic masculinity, where verbal abuse and bullying is common.

Now is the time to start taking action on mental health in the workplace, particularly in the construction industry.

At Ablemarsh Safety Consultants we have extensive experience in the construction industry. We would recommend looking at the Health and Safety Executive Working Minds campaign.

You can visit the website (Work Right) https://workright.campaign.gov.uk/campaigns/working-minds/, investigate the tools available and watch their short video, alternatively if you would like to discuss any of the issues raised, we are happy to help you - enquiries@ablemarsh.co.uk 0203 405 7660.

With stress awareness month just around the corner in April, now is a good time to start talking. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), has created The Working Minds campaign.

HALF OF ALL WORK-RELATED ILL HEALTH IS DOWN TO STRESS, DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY.

Did you know that the law requires all businesses, both large and small, to prevent work related stress and support good mental health in the workplace? Something that is also close to our heart at Ablemarsh Safety Consultants.

Based around the principle of a risk assessment, The Working Minds campaign brings together a range of free online tools, learning and support to help businesses and workers understand the best ways to prevent work related stress and encourage good mental health.

Why not visit the website https://workright.campaign.gov.uk/campaigns/working-minds/, investigate the tools available and watch their short video.

Alternatively if you would like to discuss any of the issues raised, we are happy to help you - enquiries@ablemarsh.co.uk 0203 405 7660.

The world of health and safety risk assessments takes us all over the place.

Sometimes on our travels we see the funniest things. This week, it was one of these little cuties, so we thought we would look them up.

Starship Technologies, are global leaders in autonomous local delivery robots, delivering items such as groceries, food takeaways and packages, making life both easier and more convenient for people and businesses.

Starship now operates in over 60 locations across the world and we’re sure we will see more and more of these types of things in the future.

We did wonder from a health and safety point of view how they avoid pedestrians and cross the road, but their You Tube videos explained all of that.

Each year Michael Pereira from Ablemarsh Safety Consultants is very proud to be a corporate partner and judge for , which is a public speaking competition for girls in Year 6.

Not only does this type of event develop self-confidence and personality, it also helps the girls to play a more prominent role in public life.

This year it was held during International Women's Week and the girls selected a topic and presented a speech lasting between 3-4 minutes. This year the topics were:

1. What will the impact of Sustainable Living be on our diets within the next 20 years
2. Embracing different religions and living in harmony
3. Mental Health and Wellbeing – what do you to avoid stress
4. “If I ruled the World”
5. What do you think of AI and how will it help you

is never easy. The content produced for their speech, and the presentation skills used to deliver their speeches, was second to none. Ablemarsh Safety Consultants were very proud of all the girls and to have been a part of . Thank you Soroptimist Croydon and District for organising this event.

Its New Homes Week – 26th February – 4th March 2024.

At Ablemarsh Safety Consultants, we work a lot with the construction industry on new build projects, and we feel new homes offer several advantages from a health and safety aspect:

🏘They are constructed according to the latest building codes and regulations, which often incorporate updated safety standards. This ensures the structural integrity of the building, making structural failures or collapses less likely, and that fire safety, electrical systems, and plumbing meet the required standards, reducing the risk of accidents and hazards.

🏘They are built using modern construction materials that are designed to be more resilient and resistant to environmental hazards. They may use fire-resistant materials, advanced insulation for better temperature control and energy efficiency, and mould-resistant materials for improved indoor air quality.

🏘They often incorporate the latest advancements in technology, including smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and programmable thermostats.

Investing in a new home can provide homeowners with a safer and healthier living environment for themselves and their families.

If you have any aspect of health and safety that you would like to discuss, please get in touch.

It was shocking to see the balcony collapse in Barking on the BBC News. Even more shocking was to hear that the materials used may have been substandard, or incorrect, for that type of use.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have confirmed they are looking into the collapse, and we welcome any investigation that they may decide to undertake.

Thankfully no one was hurt in this instance, but had this happened in the summer months, when people were using their balconies more frequently, it could have been a very different story.

Following a balcony collapse at Weavers Quarter, residents were told not to use 77 others.

COP 28 will empower organisations to consider incorporating environmental health and sustainability practices into their workplace.

Organisations will need to address how to reduce carbon footprints, promote eco-friendly and sustainable workplaces, and action environmental health concerns. All of this can lead to improved overall employee well-being.

➡ Occupational health – well-maintained and energy-efficient buildings often have better lighting and indoor air quality. You can further positively impact the mental health and well-being of employees by incorporating ergonomics into your workplace design, such as access to nature and green spaces.

➡ Hazardous materials and waste management – you can promote safer alternatives to using harmful chemicals and materials. If you do need to use them ensure the safe use and disposal of them to protect the environment and workers from potential harm.

➡ Climate change - extreme weather events, changing temperatures, and other climate-related factors can affect the safety of workers and workplaces. Organisations need to prepare for and mitigate these risks, particularly for employees who work outside, such as construction workers.

➡ Procurement – consider environmental and ethical factors when making procurement decisions. This includes selecting suppliers with environmentally friendly practices and ensuring the safety of products and materials used in the workplace.

➡ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - compliance with environmental regulations, and demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility, enhances your company's reputation for ethical and sustainable business practices.

Environmental health and sustainability are interconnected parts of health and safety practices in the UK and will continue to come under the spotlight.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of occupational health and safety, environmental health and safety or sustainability, please get in touch with us Ablemarsh Safety Consultants enquiries@ablemarsh.co.uk 0203 405 7660.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact health and safety in the UK across various sectors.

We don’t currently use AI, but we are keeping a close eye on how we may use it in the future for our business, and that of our clients. Here is some possible ways AI could be used to improve health and safety:

DATA ANALYSIS – by identifying patterns and trends, AI can analyse historical and current data to help predict and reduce the risk of accidents in the workplace.

MONITORING AND SURVEILLANCE - AI-powered surveillance systems could monitor workplaces for potential safety risks, such as identifying employees not wearing the correct PPE.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH MONITORING - AI could be used in the construction industry to monitor the health of workers in real-time. Wearable devices and sensors can collect data on physiological indicators, such as heart rate and temperature, to detect signs of fatigue or stress. This information can be used to ensure that employees are not at risk of health-related incidents.

ROBOTICS - AI-driven robots can be used for tasks that are hazardous to human workers, including tasks involving toxic substances, extreme temperatures, or high physical risks. Robots can perform these tasks without risking human health.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANNING - by simulating different scenarios, AI can help in developing more effective emergency response plans, allowing organisations to identify potential weaknesses and improve their preparedness for various situations, such as natural disasters or accidents.

We feel that we will need to embrace AI because it will be vital for improving H&S in the future. It may assist us in improving the accuracy of our reporting and will enable us to be complaint with current regulations.

Using AI automation will also reduce the time it takes to create a report and will therefore reduce costs for us and our clients in the long run.

We will keep you all up to date along the way with our findings and if / how we may use AI in the future.
