Chinese Medicine is more than two thousand years old, yet it has continued to evolve and remains of relevance today. Chinese philosophy believes each & every person displays a landscape, that when balanced, is healthy. If there is an imbalance, the person becomes ill. Traditional Chinese Medicine describes a complex system of "channels" & their connecting vessels as the distribution system that ca

rries qi, blood & the body fluids around the body. It is tempting to think of the channels in the same way we think of blood vessels, arteries, veins & capillaries that carry blood around the body. The channel system is indeed responsible for the distribution of the basic substances through the body, but it can be misleading, in as much as conventional anatomy & physiology would not be able to identify there pathways in a physical sense, in the way that blood vessels are identified. Traditional Chinese Medicine operates very much at a subtle energy level. Qi, blood, Jing & Shen are all essentially energetic properties. A useful analogy used to describe qi is that of a river. A river has a source and it follows it's course ultimately to the sea. As it flows it will vary from shallow to deep, quick to slow flowing, yet always following the most "natural" path. Chinese philosophy believes qi permeates everything in the Universe, there is nothing that is not a manifestation of qi. In the human form, if anything occurs to weaken or block this energy (qi) flow in any way, then the result will be an energetic imbalance that in turn will manifest itself in the physical organism as disease or illness. Along the channels are what would be best described as "access points" (acupuncture points) to the "river flow" or qi. In acupuncture, very fine needles are inserted into these "access points" or acupuncture points. The effect of the needling is expected to cause changes in the pattern of the patient's energy system with the result of restoring the patient to good health. Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Traditional Chinese Medicine will help the following: Headaches, Vertigo, Dizziness, Facial Paralysis or Neuralgia, Common Cold, Cough, Asthma, Insomnia, Palpitations, Anxiety, Depression, Epigastric Pain, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhoea, Jaundice, Impotence, Painful Joints, Rheumatism, Arthritis, Back Pain, Stomach Ulcers, Amenorrhoea, Dysmenorrhoea, Angina, Morning Sickness, Infantile Diarrhoea, Urticaria, Eczma, Acute Masitis, PMS, Cystitis, Uterine Prolapse, Alcohol and To***co Addictions, Skin Complaints etc.

I received this insightful email from AcuMedic Professional and thought it was worth sharing.
It shows the the difference between the ways in which some people practice and the importance of explaining how and why Acupuncture works for different ailments. Unfortunately, in some instances, western medical professionals are taught the basics of acupuncture and practice without fully understanding the levels on how it should be used.

You have to treat the whole 'syndrome', not just the localised area, ie: just the elbow for tennis elbow.

Anyway, I digress....

"Two doctors received enquiries from people looking for a natural solution to hay fever.

Both went to study hay fever acupuncture on the same day. But each one went to a different institute.

One doctor learned the acupuncture points and the reasons why they work. The other doctor was looking to cut corners. "Just tell me where the needle goes". No questions asked.

The next day both of them received their new hay fever patients. Each doctor needled the correct points and asked their patient to come back next week.
But only one patient came back.

Here's why: the doctor who explained the reasons for needling those points got to see the patient again, plus a new referral.

Because that patient got an explanation for the chosen acupoints, they understood why they should stick with the treatment. When their friends asked them why they are having acupuncture for hay fever, they passed on the doctor's explanation. Eager to see a doctor who explains to patients instead of talking at them, they too wanted to see that rare, helpful expert.

The other doctor had no knowledge of the theory behind the acupuncture techniques he just used, and so no idea why the patient didn't return and referrals never come.

No doubt, when people choose your treatment they expect you to explain why it works, not just to blindly follow it."
