What a start to the year!
I’m honored to be named a Sustainability Ambassador by the FDI World Dental Federation 🌍—one of only two people globally—and to have placed #3 in the World Dental Hygienist Awards video vote, representing Scotland from my clinic in Cumbernauld.
Ohh! Oral Health Hygienist Ltd was built from scratch—against resistance, uncertainty, long hours, and financial sacrifice.
Every one of you who chooses Ohh! trusts me & joins me on this journey—you are my why.
Tenets from Taekwondo guide me still: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit, alongside the RADC motto: Ex Dentibus Ensis—From the tooth, a sword. And never forgetting my dad’s words: “It’s nice to be nice.” (It was the one year anniversary of his death yesterday - felt too personal to share yesterday)
The work continues.

FDI - World Dental Federation FDI is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s Sustainability Ambassador Prize: Dr Aldrin Andre Huaman Mendoza and Dr Jacqueline Armstrong; two professionals whose work exemplifies a growing global commitment to environmentally responsible dentistry.

Awarded annually, the prize honours individuals who move beyond theory to actively champion sustainability in oral healthcare. Both Dr Huaman Mendoza and Dr Armstrong distinguished themselves through their participation in the second Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Sustainability in Dentistry, an initiative designed to equip dental professionals and students with the knowledge and practical tools needed to reduce the environmental footprint of their practice.

Their journey culminated in a final competitive submission, where participants were invited to critically examine sustainability challenges and propose impactful, real-world solutions. The winning submissions stood out for their clarity, innovation, and practical relevance, earning high praise from a panel of experts within the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Task Team.

As the dental profession continues to evolve, integrating sustainable practices into everyday care has never been more urgent. From reducing waste to rethinking the use of resources, the MOOC demonstrates how even incremental changes can contribute to meaningful, system-wide impact.

The success of Dr Huaman Mendoza and Dr Armstrong underscores the critical role of education, innovation, and leadership in shaping a more sustainable future for oral healthcare. As Sustainability Ambassadors, they represent a new generation of dental professionals; individuals who not only recognize the environmental impact of their field, but are actively working to reduce it. Their leadership serves as both an inspiration to their peers and a powerful reminder that meaningful change begins with informed action.
As we celebrate their achievements, we are reminded that the path to sustainability is a collective endeavour which depends on the commitment of professionals willing to challenge convention and champion progress.

Throughout my 35-year career, I’ve focused on one belief: oral health should improve how people live, not intimidate them. In 2020, I turned that belief into action by founding Ohh! Oral Health Hygienist Ltd, Scotland’s first independent, direct-access dental hygiene clinic, built on my philosophy Whole Health, Not Just Oral Health.
Ohh! was designed to support people across every life stage—from pregnancy and early childhood to adolescence, adulthood, and older age—prioritising prevention, education, and longevity. I wanted patients to feel seen and supported, not rushed or judged. At Ohh! I don’t treat mouths; I care for people.
Fear is replaced with familiarity, and routine care becomes a relationship. Appointments allow time for clinical care, emotional reassurance, and behaviour change, delivered in sensory-adapted spaces that reduce anxiety and build trust. Flexible hours, neurodiversity-aware design, and accessible pricing remove barriers, while post-visit support reinforces confidence and long-term habits.
I opened with zero patients. Today, I’ve supported over 1,000 individuals, many of whom had avoided dental care for years. Their reviews—over 200 five-star testimonials—speak of restored confidence, reduced fear, and a sense of control over their health. Those voices are my greatest measure of success.
My reach extends beyond the clinic through free webinars, digital education, and social campaigns, ensuring guidance is available even to those who may never attend in person. Sustainability is embedded throughout—prevention-focused care, digital systems, reduced travel, eco-conscious materials—connecting personal health to planetary health.
This work demonstrates that entrepreneurship in dental hygiene can transform individual lives. Small changes, shared knowledge, and compassionate care create a powerful ripple effect—the butterfly effect—where prevention truly becomes progress.

Community impact is the heartbeat of Ohh! My Whole Health, Not Just Oral Health initiative brings together three interconnected priorities: oral health education, skin cancer awareness, and environmental stewardship—particularly bumblebee conservation. Together, they reflect a belief that human health, environmental health, and future wellbeing are inseparable.
Through partnerships with schools, nurseries, gyms, youth football clubs, and community organisations, I deliver education that empowers people to recognise early signs of disease, adopt healthy habits, and understand how biodiversity supports food systems and overall health. Collaborations with SKCIN, local sports clubs, and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust create engaging, practical learning experiences that resonate across generations.
Entrepreneurship has allowed me to innovate access to care where gaps existed. Ohh! offers inclusive, direct-access hygiene services with extended hours, weekend clinics, and neurodiversity-aware design, ensuring care is available to those often excluded. Outreach programmes take education to where the need is greatest—not just where it is easiest.
Sustainability is embedded at community level: digital records, energy-efficient systems, sustainable procurement, and waste reduction demonstrate that healthcare can protect both people and the planet. Patients learn that prevention reduces emergency care, antibiotic use, and environmental impact—aligning with WHO and FDI sustainability principles.
The impact is visible: children develop lifelong habits, adults feel empowered to manage their health, and older adults receive care that supports independence and dignity. More broadly, Ohh! acts as a community hub—connecting health professionals, educators, charities, and local leaders around a shared goal of prevention and progress.
This model proves that purpose-driven entrepreneurship can strengthen communities, reduce inequalities, and create healthier futures—together.

My greatest entrepreneurial achievement is creating Ohh! Oral Health Hygienist Ltd during the COVID-19 pandemic—without external investment, without a blueprint, and without a single patient—and growing it into a thriving, respected, and globally relevant model of care.
Establishing Scotland’s first standalone, direct-access hygiene clinic required courage and persistence. Regulatory uncertainty, professional resistance, and financial risk were constant challenges, yet they reinforced my commitment to building something that truly served people.
Ohh! was intentionally designed to be inclusive, prevention-led, and sustainability-conscious. Sensory-adapted spaces, education-rich appointments, flexible scheduling, and behaviour-support strategies allow care to go beyond treatment and create lasting change. An integrated digital ecosystem—education, outreach, and follow-up—extends impact well beyond the clinic walls.
Sustainability is woven through every decision: reduced travel through local access, digital systems, energy efficiency, responsible waste management, and eco-friendly materials. This aligns with the WHO Global Strategy for Oral Health (2023–2030) and the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Toolkit, showing that high-quality care and environmental responsibility can coexist.
Collaboration is central. I work closely with dentists, specialists, schools, charities, and community organisations to ensure continuity of care and broader impact. I’ve also built a compassionate, highly aligned team where patients are active partners in their health journey.
From zero patients to over 1,000 supported, 200+ five-star reviews, strong retention, and international recognition—including a European Award of Distinction and finalist status at the 2026 World Dental Hygienist Awards—Ohh! proves that small, purpose-driven businesses can create meaningful, scalable change.

I am most proud of reimagining what dental hygiene can be.
Creating Ohh! wasn’t just about opening a clinic—it was about changing the experience of care. I’ve replaced fear with familiarity, routine with relationship, and clinical detachment with creativity and compassion. Patients who once avoided dentistry now describe their visits as enjoyable and empowering—something they look forward to. That shift never stops feeling profound.
Beyond Ohh! my 35-year career has included service in the Armed Forces Dental Corps, volunteering with Dentaid in Uganda, working within the NHS both in Education and Specialised roles within Teaching Hospitals. I’ve contributed published articles, CPD content, and ongoing professional education, and I remain an active voice for innovation, equality of access, and prevention-led care.
Recognition through multiple UK Dentistry Awards, a European Award of Distinction, and finalist selection for the World Dental Hygienist Awards 2026 is deeply humbling. Yet, on difficult days, it’s my patient reviews I return to. Their words—often thoughtful and deeply personal—remind me why this work matters. They are my “why”.
I believe hygiene is a gateway to bigger conversations: about wellbeing, sustainability, longevity, and self-confidence. As David Attenborough reminds us, this is an extraordinary time to be alive—one where empowerment, collaboration, and positive change are possible.
By putting the mouth back into the body, and the body back into our planet, my work reflects a simple truth: Life is Beautiful – La Vita è Bella. Creating what didn’t exist—because people needed it—has been the greatest privilege of my career.

I am blown away, as are the staff also, by the amount of support we had for The World Title & I had initially purchased this brush thinking I could use it to incentivise likes on our social media reach (some months 50,000) but alas I could not it’s not allowed as creates an unfair playing field! So in the cupboard it went - however now it’s all over we added all supporters to a spinner & our lovely patient Danielle WON! She was able to collect it immediately & is off home to charge it ❤️ Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🌍 in my eyes I did win - maybe not a trophy but in having the best patients x
