🎃 Halloween at Cumbernauld Care. 🎃

We spent the day enjoying everything from pumpkin decorating to music and a fitness session.

William chose the colours for his pumpkins and enjoyed some one-to-one time with a cuppa, a chat and a bit of indoor gardening.

Lourie joined in with arts and crafts, fitness and a singalong.

Kim’s pumpkin-themed fitness session set the tone, and everyone made it feel light-hearted and fun.

A brilliant Halloween day round. 💛

Tom from Folksy Theatre has been entertaining our residents here in Cumbernauld for over 12 years now! 🎭

His show last week had it all - musical comedy, a wedding, a baby and so much laughter. We had a great afternoon. Live entertainment like this brings so much joy and helps create wonderful shared experiences we love to talk about for days afterwards.

Thank you Tom!

Reminiscence and sensory session. 🫧

We recently explored bubbles as a sensory activity. The visual stimulation, sounds textures and movement can be really beneficial for our residents living with dementia.

Laurie was fascinated by the textures, sounds and colours. Bill said "it's been a long time since I've seen bubbles" and Olive told us, "I feel like a child again, they are magical. Look at the colours...beautiful. Thank you."

Sensory activities like this can help stimulate memories, reduce anxiety and create moments of joy and connection.

🍂 Autumn days at Cumbernauld Care.🌱

It's been a busy few weeks filled with creativity, movement and time outdoors.

We've been crafting beautiful autumn lanterns using glass jars and acrylic paints. Ian, Jean and Joyce loved sharing their creative ideas and favourite autumn colours. Jean shared her love of seeing twinkling lights glow in the evenings.

Meanwhile, Joyce continues her daily power walks around the garden, watching the leaves change, soaking up the fresh air and birdsong.

Indoors, William has been busy planting forget-me-not seeds in his room and can't wait to watch them grow and bloom 🌸

It's been a wonderful start to the season, sharing stories, enjoying nature and celebrating all the little things that bring us joy.

🎡 “Those were the days.” - Jean

Jean shared memories of Blackpool holidays in the 1970s with her husband Alex. They visited twice a year, sharing chips on the promenade in the glow of the illuminations. Jean would get dressed up to dance the night away with Alex in the Tower Ballroom.

"When I had my daughter we took her to Blackpool and would play in the sand and have ice cream. Linda loved it, no matter how cold it was, she ran around so very happy," Jean remembers. "After Alex passed, Linda took me on holiday and we went to Blackpool and chatted of the great days. Wonderful memories I'll hold in my heart."

We recreated Jean's Blackpool experience with our seaside-themed day. Jean enjoyed her mocktail surrounded by music, friends and laughter, bringing her stories back to life.

Our Summer of Reminiscence aims to connect us with our past, helping to maintain our sense of identity and strengthen emotional wellbeing by celebrating the experiences that shaped who we are. Smiles like Jean’s makes it all worth it.

🌊 Summers by the Sea with Olive.

Olive, 95, grew up in Portslade, a mile from Brighton. During the war, she and her brother Victor would wait with their parents on the grass until they had the all-clear to go on the beach. The moment the whistle blew, they ran to the waves, built sandcastles and played ball games.

Her mother always packed sandwiches and cakes for a picnic and even with nights spent in the Anderson shelter, Olive cherished those seaside days. Years later, she took her own children, Leslie and Miles, back to Brighton to share her love of the beach.

We brought those memories back at Cumbernauld with sand, buckets, spades, deckchairs and the sound of waves. For Olive, feeling sand through her fingers recalled the joy of childhood summers. For residents living with dementia, sensory reminiscence experiences like these sparks stories and brings comfort and joy.
