🌊 Summers by the Sea with Olive.
Olive, 95, grew up in Portslade, a mile from Brighton. During the war, she and her brother Victor would wait with their parents on the grass until they had the all-clear to go on the beach. The moment the whistle blew, they ran to the waves, built sandcastles and played ball games.
Her mother always packed sandwiches and cakes for a picnic and even with nights spent in the Anderson shelter, Olive cherished those seaside days. Years later, she took her own children, Leslie and Miles, back to Brighton to share her love of the beach.
We brought those memories back at Cumbernauld with sand, buckets, spades, deckchairs and the sound of waves. For Olive, feeling sand through her fingers recalled the joy of childhood summers. For residents living with dementia, sensory reminiscence experiences like these sparks stories and brings comfort and joy.
