Fibromyalgia: When the Body Has Been Coping for Too Long

I see more and more clients with FM these days.......

Fibromyalgia isn’t “just sore muscles.”
It’s what can happen when the body and nervous system have been under too much stress for too long.

People with fibromyalgia often feel widespread pain, deep fatigue, poor sleep, brain fog, and sensitivity to touch. What makes it especially difficult is that these symptoms don’t always show up on scans or tests — yet the pain and exhaustion are very real.

Rather than being caused by damaged muscles, fibromyalgia is now understood as a condition where the nervous system becomes over-sensitive. The body stays stuck in a constant state of alert, as if it’s always bracing for danger. Over time, this can affect energy levels, sleep, hormones, digestion, mood, and the way pain is felt.

Many people with fibromyalgia have been coping, adapting, and pushing through for years — often carrying emotional stress, responsibility, or trauma without enough support or rest. Eventually, the body reaches a point where it simply can’t keep going in the same way.

By the time someone seeks hands-on therapies, they’re often tired of explaining their pain, tired of trying things that haven’t helped, and tired of not feeling fully understood. There’s usually a mix of hope and exhaustion.

This is why approaches like reflexology and therapeutic massage need to be 'gentle, respectful, and responsive'. Fibromyalgia bodies don’t respond well to force. Instead, they benefit from treatments that help the nervous system feel safe enough to relax.

When done thoughtfully, reflexology can support the body’s natural calming response, encourage deeper rest, and gently help the system step out of constant “fight or flight.” The aim isn’t to push through pain, but to work with the body, at its pace.

A reflexologist and mentor of mine once described fibromyalgia as "a powerful lion kept in a cage" — not dangerous, but full of energy with nowhere to go. I completely agree. Healing isn’t about trying to control or suppress that lion, but about opening the cage slowly and safely, so the body can begin to relax, rebalance, and trust again.

Above all, no one with fibromyalgia should feel dismissed or alone. Being heard, believed, and treated with care can be a powerful part of the healing journey.

Why some areas on the feet feel tender or painful during Reflexology

A question I’m often asked is:
“Why does that spot on my foot feel tender?”

Tenderness in certain areas of the feet is very common, and it’s not something to worry about.

The feet reflect the whole body.
When an area is sensitive, it can indicate that the corresponding part of the body/mind or nervous system has been under pressure, overworked, stressed or adapting to how a part of the body/mind change.

Tenderness can be linked to:
🔆 tension or stress held in the nervous system
🔆 areas that have been compensating or overworking
🔆 emotional or mental issues
🔆 reduced circulation or mobility in that area

As reflexology continues, these tender spots often soften.
This is a beautiful sign that the body is responding, rebalancing and letting go.

Your body speaks through your feet, hands, face and ears not to alarm you, but to guide you.
Reflexology simply listens and supports that conversation.

Gentle awareness creates change.
And your body always knows the way back to balance 💚

Do you know the difference between sciatica and piriformis syndrome?

🔈 IT MAY NOT BE SCIATICA, THOUGH SYMPTOMS ARE ALMOST THE SAME.

The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock, behind the gluteus maximus. It runs diagonally from the lower spine to the upper surface of the femur, with the sciatic nerve running underneath or through the muscle. The piriformis muscle helps the hip rotate, turning the leg and foot outward.

As a result of overuse, injury, or strain, the piriformis muscle can tighten, swell, or spam. Sports that involve repetitive forward movement of the legs, or problems in surrounding joints like the sacroiliac joints are typical causes of piriformis syndrome.

The location of the piriformis muscle near the sciatic nerve means that when the piriformis muscle is irritated or injured, it can affect the sciatic nerve as well.

Symptoms of piriformis syndrome include tenderness and pain in the buttock area, accompanied by sciatica-like pain, numbness, and weakness that runs down the back of the thigh, calf, and foot. Pain from piriformis syndrome is often worse when walking up stairs, after sitting, or while walking or running.

Piriformis syndrome is often confused with other conditions, especially lumbar spine conditions. Attaining a proper diagnosis of piriformis syndrome is important when considering treatment for low back and leg pain.

Piriformis Muscle Self Release Ball Technique:

After finding the piriformis muscle place the release ball onto it. Then straighten the leg and lean over with your weight on the muscle and roll onto it. Roll slowly back and forth on the ball finding that Sweet Spot. Continue rolling for about 2-3 minutes and then switch over to the other side doing 2-3 sets.
