Iona Lawson Hypnotherapy - Solution Focused Hypnotherapy I'm a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist working both online and face to face I graduated as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist from CPHT in Edinburgh.

Using a highly effective combination of positive psychotherapy alongside hypnotherapy (a wonderful relaxation technique), this talking therapy is combined with practical, well-researched strategies to help you make significant, positive changes in your life. During the Initial Consultation, I explain the science behind how the brain works so you will be able to understand how and why this process is so effective. It's all about retraining the brain, helping people move from a negative thought pattern to a positive one. CPHT is considered as one of the UK’s leading Hypnotherapy Schools. I have both the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH) and the Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD) – only 20% of hypnotherapists have the HPD qualification. I'm a member of the Association of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) and the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). I'm fully insured and DBS checked. When I’m not seeing clients, I really appreciate the time that I have to do things I enjoy. I love walking our dogs in the woods behind where we live. We’re really lucky to have some amazing scenery and walks on our doorstep. On my walks I often see deer, hares and even red squirrels!

I also love heading out without my four-legged friends for a stomp with my headphones in (but in transparency mode so I can hear the birdsong) I often listen to a podcast my favourites are a good true crime that I can get lost in.

I also really enjoy cooking and quite often try new recipes on my family some of which are more successful than others!

Reading is another passion of mine. I read every night and if I can find some time during the week I will try and squeeze some more reading in. I enjoy both fiction and non fiction. I’m part of a book club which is great at getting me to read books I perhaps wouldn’t pick. It’s also a great excuse to get together with some friends on a regular basis!

This week has been a busy and really rewarding week. I’ve seen clients both face to face and online. I’ve helped people with a variety of issues from anxiety, work stress, OCD, insomnia, lack of confidence, emetophobia (fear of being sick or someone else being sick) and more! Oh and I’ve also helped a client with a specific fear and another with stopping smoking. I’ve had the chance to meet some new clients too.

My week is so varied and it’s wonderful to see clients making progress even if it’s just a small change or step forward.

If you find it hard to relax, you’re not alone.

Many people say,
“I don’t know how to switch off.”
“I feel guilty resting.”
“My mind just won’t stop.”

Relaxation isn’t laziness — it’s a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned.

Here are simple ways to begin:

1. Breathe low and slow
Inhale for 4, exhale for 6. Did you know that a longer exhales signal safety to your nervous system?

2. Relax your jaw and shoulders
These are two places we hold stress without realising. Drop them gently.

3. Create a wind-down ritual
Why not try dimming the lights, reducing screen time, putting on some soft music — repetition teaches your brain it’s safe to relax. Find a routine the suits you and repeat it.

4. Give yourself permission
Rest is productive. A regulated nervous system improves focus, sleep and emotional control. Give yourself permission to relax.

5. Try guided relaxation or hypnotherapy
Deep relaxation during hypnotherapy allows your subconscious mind to release stored tension and build calmer responses.

You don’t have to earn rest. You don’t have to wait until you’re exhausted. Learning to relax is one of the most powerful gifts you can give yourself.

Happiness isn’t about being positive all the time. It’s about creating small daily habits that support your mind and nervous system.

Here are some gentle, realistic ways to increase your happiness:
1. Regulate before you react
When we’re overwhelmed, happiness feels impossible. Slow breathing, stepping outside, or even pausing for 60 seconds can reset your nervous system.

2. Notice your self-talk
Would you speak to a friend the way you speak to yourself?
Why not try challenging that harsh inner criticism and replace it with something kinder and more balanced?

3. Limit comparison
Social media shows highlight reels, not real life. Remember people only share their ‘best’ bits.

4. Prioritise sleep
Your emotional resilience is directly linked to rest. Tired minds struggle to feel positive.

5. Do one thing just for you
Not productive. Not for anyone else. Just something small that feels good.

True happiness isn’t constant excitement — it’s calm, stability, and feeling safe in your own mind.

But when that protective response becomes constant — racing thoughts, tight chest, overthinking conversations, struggling to relax — it can feel just exhausting.

So how can hypnotherapy help? Hypnotherapy works by calming the nervous system and gently accessing the subconscious patterns that are keeping anxiety in place. Alongside that I explain to clients how our brain works; this knowledge is vital and so empowering for clients. They can finally understand why they’re feeling the way they’re feeling.
During sessions we focus on what’s been good, we discuss the brain in more detail, and each client finds a small step each week. Then it’s the hypnosis part of the session, you remain fully in control it’s just like listening to a bedtime story. Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed state where your mind becomes more open to positive, helpful suggestions.

After some wonderful years with a therapy room in Auchtermuchty, starting today, I’ve just moved to join Eden Therapies in Cupar. I’m delighted to be joining a great team of people. I have a wonderful therapy room with easy parking and a lift for easy access to our floor.

I’m a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist; this type of therapy uses a combination of talking therapy alongside hypnosis (for hypnosis think like listening to a bedtime story!).
