About 6 months ago, I treated a 65 year old lady who came to see me for lower back pain. She hadn’t been able to sleep properly for 8 months. She was convinced she had simply pulled a muscle. Pain medication, exercises, nothing had helped.

The pain started after she lifted a heavy plant pot while gardening. The next day, she could hardly move. She could still manage some daily tasks like cooking and cleaning, but vacuuming was difficult.

When I asked her to lie down on the treatment couch, her back went into severe muscle spasm and she really struggled to get comfortable. That was a red flag. It didn’t feel like a straightforward muscle strain. I advised her to see her GP as soon as possible.

A few weeks later, she contacted me. An X-ray confirmed a spinal compression fracture. She was placed in a brace and advised to pause physiotherapy.

This is why getting assessed by a professional matters. Sometimes the body does heal on its own but if you’re unsure, please don’t guess or push through the pain.

Today I helped a patient who came in with very severe shoulder and arm pain.
He mentioned his thumb and index finger felt numb, and he was worried he had a rotator cuff injury.

After listening to his symptoms and carrying out a physical assessment, it became clear that his pain was actually coming from a trapped nerve in the neck.
Once we treated the affected area, he felt relief straight away.

Pain in the shoulder and arm isn’t always caused by the muscles. Sometimes the nerves are involved, and this needs a different approach.

End of my week off today and back to work tomorrow! I am looking forward to getting back into my usual routine 😄

We had such a lovely little break spent two nights at a spa hotel in Kelso (so relaxing!) and then added a night in Edinburgh. Tried breakfast at Dishoom for the first time and oh my goodness… it was amazing! They kept topping up my chai tea I could’ve happily had a whole jug to myself ☕️💛

Today I took a day off and spent it in Edinburgh.
I treated myself to a 90 minute massage with a new therapist I hadn’t seen before. Last month I tried another lady who wasn’t quite the right fit, but this time, after just 30 minutes, I knew she was the one. I even extended my session to 2 hours.

Afterwards, I felt completely rejuvenated. The mix of relaxation and deep work on my tension was exactly what I needed. I could feel my stress melt away, along with my shoulder pain.

Last session for Nathalie today 💛 Nathalie is an Art History student who just graduated from the University of St Andrews two weeks ago. She’s been coming to see me since her second year for general wellbeing support during study and exam time. Massage and acupuncture always helped her feel more grounded and relaxed.

Today is her last day in St Andrews, and I’ve truly enjoyed being part of her self-care routine over the years. It’s been a lovely connection to hold space for.
