JOY
Joy does not arrive with a fanfare,
on a red carpet strewn with the flowers of a perfect life.
Joy sneaks in, as you pour a cup of coffee,
watching the sun hit your favourite tree, just right.
And you usher joy away,
because you are not ready for it.
Your house is not as it must be,
for such a distinguished guest.
But joy cares nothing for your messy home,
or your bank-balance,
or your waistline, you see.
Joy is supposed to slither through the cracks of your imperfect life,
that’s how joy works.
You cannot invite her, you can only be ready when she appears.
And hug her with meaning,
because in this very moment,
joy chose you.

Another spectacular road through the Dales, onwards to Hawes. It became Jeremy Clarkson's favourite road. The Buttertubs.

Truth be known, this route has a high profile. But I know of an even better version of the Buttertubs! Not more than a few miles away.

A beautiful view of Arkengarthdale where we love to walk. Always used to end up in the Red Lion in Langthwaite!

The pub's landlady, Rowena, bounced back after the catastrophic deluge in the dale in 2019. The pub and Rowena’s home were flooded to a depth of four feet. Many of the wonderful photos of the Vets series "All Creatures Great and Small" were lost.
Then, on top of all this, she managed to stay afloat during the shut-downs of Covid.

Despite the problems, Rowena carries on supported by her sister Marguerita, serving excellent beers and welcoming the hikers who love to sit on the benches outside the pub (when it's not raining)!

The ancient spring at Gainford. Thought to have been there since Roman times. It's a beautiful walk when it isn't so wet with constant rain!
The water is very salty but absolutely safe to drink although it's not a pleasant taste...

A break in the rain and a beautiful sunset and the oak tree. Teesdale is the forgotten county! Long may it continue. It's so beautiful and yet so few know about it...

The increase in sightings of Asian hornets is a catastrophe for the UK's natural bee populations.
These invasive hornets are already wreaking havoc in mainland Europe. Nests have been found in East Sussex, Kent, Devon and Dorset - all costal areas. The real threat will come when they move inland. The Asian Hornet or Vespa Velutina which is native to parts of Asia, was first detected in Britain in 2016. Its activity peaks in August and September.
Asian hornets are about an inch long and have brown thoraxes, yellow legs and black heads with orange faces.
