Christmas can be stressful and emotionally challenging, especially for people with dementia and their families. Here are some tips to help you prepare. 💙

🕰️ It can be helpful to try to maintain some normal routines over Christmas.

🛒 Vital services like pharmacies, shops and GPs have reduced opening hours over the Christmas period. Planning ahead ensures you have everything you might need.

🕯️ Think about how you can adapt traditions so the person with dementia can continue to participate.

🎁 The person with dementia could help with festive preparations, such as wrapping presents, sending cards or putting up decorations.

🍽️ Consider if there’s any food the person with dementia prefers, and the portion sizes they normally eat.

🎬 You could ask a friend or family member to sit with the person with dementia, listen to music or watch your favourite film.

For some people, symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can feel more noticeable or harder to manage during the winter.

But small things can help:

🔵 try some physical activity – anything that gets you moving
🔵 make the most of natural light – getting outside or sitting near windows
🔵 plan for tougher days – shifting stressful tasks or building in more rest

There’s also treatment available if you’re finding things really tough – such as light therapy, talking therapies or medication.

We are very sad to announce the passing of our dearly loved GP and friend, Dr Geoff Potter on 3rd November.

Geoff worked at Denmark Street Surgery from 1990 - 2013 when he retired as a GP, but continued as Deputy Lead Training Programme Director to help train new Doctors until 2019.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but especially our colleagues who worked with him.

National Self-Care Week, 17th to 23rd November

It’s Self-Care Week, and your annual reminder to set aside some time for you.

We’re living longer lives, but not necessarily healthier, with chronic conditions on the rise. Managing stress, well-being and physical health all contribute to a healthy mind and body.

Demand for health services has risen significantly in recent years, with long-term conditions growing. Preventive health is key to a healthier future for both your mental and physical well-being, and self-care is at the heart of this.

Try these self-care ideas:

• Take a mindful walk
• Try meditation
• Set boundaries – it’s okay to say no
• Speak to someone if you’re struggling
• Do one thing that brings you joy

Self-care looks different for everyone – find what works for you.
