💙 Diabetes Awareness 💙

Did you know that millions of people in the UK are living with diabetes, and many more are at risk without even knowing it?

Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to complications if left unmanaged — but early diagnosis and the right support can make a huge difference.

✔️ Know the signs:
• Feeling very thirsty
• Needing to urinate more often
• Extreme tiredness
• Unexplained weight loss
• Blurred vision

✔️ Reduce your risk:
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Stay active
• Eat a balanced diet
• Attend your regular health checks

If you’re experiencing symptoms or are concerned about your risk, please contact the surgery to arrange a check-up.

We’re here to support you every step of the way 💙

💚 Mental Health Awareness Week 💚

Take a moment to check in with yourself and with the people around you. A simple message, a conversation, or even just listening can make a real difference.

Let’s continue to break the stigma, support one another, and create a space where it’s okay to not be okay.

🌿 Be kind to your mind
🤝 Reach out when you need support
💬 Talk openly — your voice matters

📢 Missed Appointments – April Update

In April, a significant amount of clinical time was lost due to patients not attending their appointments:

GP: 6.85 hours
Nurse Practitioner: 9.5 hours
Nurses: 13.6 hours
Health Care Assistants: 4.25 hours

That’s over 34 hours of appointments that could have been offered to other patients in need.

Missed appointments waste valuable NHS resources and delay care for others.

👉 If you are unable to attend your appointment, please contact the surgery as soon as possible to cancel or rearrange.

By letting us know, you help us offer your appointment to someone else who needs it.

Thank you for your cooperation.

💙 ME Awareness Week 2026 💙

This week (Monday 11th – Sunday 17th May) marks ME Awareness Week, with International ME/CFS Awareness Day on 12th May.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a serious, long-term, multi-system condition that affects around 1.35 million people across the UK, including those experiencing long-term symptoms following COVID-19.

A key feature of ME/CFS is post-exertional malaise (PEM), where even small amounts of physical or mental activity can significantly worsen symptoms. People living with ME/CFS may also experience severe fatigue, pain, and cognitive difficulties.

This year’s theme highlights hope and support, including initiatives like the “Seeds of Hope” campaign and community events such as Blue Sunday: Tea Party for ME.

As a practice, we want to help raise awareness, improve understanding, and support those affected by ME/CFS. If you or someone you know is living with these symptoms, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Together, we can help build awareness, compassion, and better support 💙

🧼 World Hand Hygiene Day – 5 May 2026

Clean hands really do save lives. This year’s theme, “Action saves lives,” is a reminder that good hand hygiene isn’t just a routine — it’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent infections and protect our community.

At our GP surgery, we’re committed to keeping patients, staff, and visitors safe. But hand hygiene is something we can all take responsibility for — both in healthcare settings and at home.

💡 Why it matters:

Helps stop the spread of infections like colds, flu, and stomach bugs
Protects vulnerable patients with weaker immune systems
Reduces the need for antibiotics, helping tackle antimicrobial resistance

🖐️ When should you clean your hands?

Before and after visiting the surgery
After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
Before eating or preparing food
After using the toilet
When caring for someone who is unwell

✔️ Simple steps:

Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Use hand sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available
Make sure to clean between fingers, thumbs, and wrists

Every small action counts. By keeping our hands clean, we help protect ourselves, our families, and our wider community.

The NHS is updating asthma care with the “Blue to New” approach 💙➡️

Instead of relying on blue reliever inhalers alone, patients are being moved to combined inhalers that both prevent and relieve symptoms by treating underlying inflammation—not just opening the airways.

✅ Fewer asthma attacks
✅ Better long-term control
✅ Fewer hospital visits
✅ More environmentally friendly

Many people may now use just one inhaler instead of two.

If you have asthma, contact your GP for a review to see if your treatment should be updated.

🌞 May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Stay Safe in the Sun! 🌞

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but the good news is that many cases are preventable and early detection can save lives.

This month, we’re encouraging everyone to take simple steps to protect themselves and recognise the early signs.

🔍 Know the signs – check your skin regularly for:
• A new mole or growth
• Changes in size, shape or colour of a mole
• Itching, bleeding, crusting or pain in a mole
• A sore that doesn’t heal within 4 weeks

☀️ Top sun safety tips:
• Use SPF 30+ sunscreen (with 4★ UVA rating) and reapply every 2 hours
• Stay in the shade between 11am–3pm
• Wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and UV sunglasses
• Keep children well protected from the sun
• Avoid sunbeds – they significantly increase your risk
• Check your skin regularly

👶 Children are especially vulnerable, and sunburn early in life can increase future risk.

By taking a few simple steps, you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

If you notice any changes or have concerns, please don’t delay—contact your GP.
