Most people don’t come for a massage because they just want muscles worked on…

They come because something feels off.

Tight, yes. But also overwhelmed. Wired. Tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix.

And what they actually need isn’t just technique…

It’s to feel safe enough in their body to let go.

That’s the work I do.

Not just easing tension, but helping your whole system come back into balance; physically and emotionally.

So you leave feeling like yourself again… not just “looser”.

I’ve got a few spaces available this month for 1:1 sessions.

If your body has been asking for a pause, this might be it 💜✨

Drop me a message or comment “READY” and I’ll send you the details.

Jet washing and mindfulness.

Huh?

Allow me to explain.

When was the last time you did a mundane task that took longer than your attention span is comfortable with? When was the last time you did the same thing continuously long enough to get bored? To get frustrated even? To start having thoughts about everything else you'd rather be doing?

Unbelievably interesting things start to happen when you allow yourself to become bored sh**less, because what happens is your brain starts to try and fill in the blanks with all kinds of thoughts and stories. This might be thoughts about how much you dislike what you're doing, thoughts about what you'd rather be doing, or thoughts about everything you could have done better in your work meeting last week. Whatever it is, it's taking you away from experiencing what's happening right in front of you.

Mundane tasks are actually a PERFECT opportunity to practice mindfulness, which as a reminder, simply means paying attention deliberately, without judgement in the present moment.

Today I started by focusing my attention on the visuals of the dirt being blasted away (which was unbelievably satisfying), when I noticed my mind wandering away, I simply brought it back to the task at hand. When I noticed thoughts coming in about the sense of satisfaction waning, I turned my attention to the sound of the machine, the various tones I could hear and picking out each one in turn.

When we do this, we not only train our attentive muscle, which helps enormously with focus and concentration, but we also permit ourselves a chunk of time to just be. Even though I was completing a task, I was able to find non-doing within the doing, and this creates a wonderful sense of spaciousness. When we drop our judgements about liking or not liking something whilst we're performing a task too, we allow ourselves to experience the action as it is objectively, which is great practice for when the sh** really hits the fan in life.

So next time you have to do something that you don't like, or that takes an inordinate amount of time (this took me 4 hours) use it as extended meditation practice, your brain will thank you 😉

It's all starting to come together...

One really bad massage led me down this path and how thankful I am for that bad massage now! 🤣

Introducing:

The Whole Person Healing Method

A support system for therapists wanting to deepen their practice, create a sustainable career and charge what they're worth whilst creating lasting transformation for their clients 💜🙌

We've all been there in our training days:

"Never talk during a treatment and encourage your clients to relax by also not talking"

Arrrrrrgh! This is so outdated! 🤦

Sometimes our nervous system needs a conversation to settle. Some of us need to feel seen and heard before we can truly exhale, and sometimes the vulnerability of touch requires conversational connection to feel natural, especially for newer clients who don't know us so well.

Yes, some of our clients will want to 'switch off' completely and require silence to do that (I actually happen to be one of those clients). But as therapists it's our job to treat every client we see as an individual and this means getting to know what makes them feel safe. You will usually be able to pick this up by simply observing them and how they behave on first meeting, if you know what to look for...

And if you're less experienced at spotting the signs, there are very simple non-invasive questions you can ask to learn more about what works for them.

I'm interested in working with therapists who want to step away from outdated prescriptive practice and step into a deeper connection with themselves, their work and their clients. I'm looking to work with therapists who want to create memorable experiences that stay with their clients long after they leave the treatment room and return year after year, creating sustainable income and a fulfilling career.

DM me if this speaks to you.

Co-regulation in my opinion, should be the bare minimum requirement for therapists working closely with clients. If you don't feel safe within moments of stepping through the door, something is amiss.

What most people don't realise is that your nervous system can detect the state of my nervous system before I've even opened my mouth, and the state I'm in, will directly determine your felt sense of safety.

If we want our clients to feel relaxed we absolutely MUST make our own regulation a priority, which means being disciplined and consistent with our own practices.

My clients regularly fall asleep and there's a very good reason for that. I'm the safe space. Not because I say I am, not because of the soft music (although that helps) or the warm bed (also glorious), but because my nervous system sends the message "you can rest here".

I'm going to be working with a limited number of therapists this year, sharing my wisdom on this bottom-up nervous system informed approach. If your clients are struggling to fully let go or are returning to your practice with the same issues time and time again, it might be time to make a change. Message me if this resonates 💜✨

Everything is fine, so why am I still not sleeping?

Because your body doesn't know it's safe yet, and it will again, in time. You can support that natural deactivation process with gentle breathwork and holistic therapies.

Some musings on holding patterns. Enjoy!

PS. I still need more practice at getting these reels under 3 minutes but the geek in me just takes over 👀🤣

If you're coming to your massage therapist with chronic tension and they're not asking about what's going on in your emotional landscape, the best you can possibly hope for is a week of temporary relief.

This is great, but it's going to have you going back month after month with the same issue.

The conversation we should be having is about why your muscles are forming holding patterns in the first place. What does your nervous system feel it needs to brace against?

Because until we look at things bottom-up, starting with the nervous system, we can't possibly hope to transform anything in the long term.

If you're tired of investing your time and money on symptom management, Whole Person Healing is for you. This is embodied, integrated nervous system level work designed to get your body unstuck on all planes, emotional, mental, and physical.

Book your appointment if you're ready for real change, link in the bio 💜✨

The beauty of Whole Person Healing is that it's not a one size fits all approach. It's not even a one size fits each client every time approach. Every session is a new beginning and a fresh opportunity to explore what is needed, and so I use a variety of therapies in my sessions. Mindfulness is just one of them but one that holds a soft spot on my heart.

I found mindfulness over a decade ago when I was technically clinically well after counselling, but definitely not happy. I was stable, but was still struggling to access joy. After years of trying to find joy in the right career progression, buying my first house, and any number of other things, do you want to know where I found it? Right in front of me, in the present moment, without needing anything. I started to smile and feel warm inside at the taste of my hot chocolate, or the sound of the birds singing outside of the window.

What got me there?

Learning to pay attention, in the present moment, without judgement. Put simply, allowing everything to be exact as it is without trying to change it. Radical acceptance.

Does this mean being a doormat in every situation? Definitely not, mindfulness leaves room for sane assessment of circumstances, boundaries and self love and protection. But radical acceptance of the moment as it is allows us to better see the situation exactly as it is, instead of seeing it through our very biased lens. Only then can we take appropriate action.

Big love 💜✨

My Story

Hi, I’m Ruth and I’m the proud owner of Unity Wellbeing who have been offering holistic therapies for three years. So, why holistic therapies? The answer is, I love helping people. For the length of my career, I have had the pleasure of working in public service, working for the NHS in Stroke Rehabilitation and in education both as an English Teacher and in further education as an Apprenticeships Tutor. As such, I’m able to bring a little of my teaching skills to my meditation classes, a little of my medical knowledge into my massage practise, and have the privilege of feeling rewarded in continuing to help others.

Outside my professional life, I am a life-long and passionate dancer. I have been dancing for 24 years, have suffered various injuries and as such have always made looking after my body a priority. This is just one of the things that inspires me in wanting to help others do the same. I also practice mindfulness meditation daily. This started following attending a 10 week course on mindfulness. This course was a turning point in my life. I believe it was pivotal to me re-gaining a positive outlook following a life changing separation in my late 20s. Everyone, at some point in their life, will experience stressful situations, traumatic events, or simply feel like they’ve lost their direction. My job then, is to provide that tool box to combat stress, live with that trauma or find that direction.

I originally trained with ITEC in Swedish Massage, which was my first love in holistic therapy. I was taught by a very dedicated, warm and supportive tutor and I feel this helped me build the foundations of a career I hope to pursue for many years to come. This soon followed on with 'massage at your desk' Seated Acupressure and Deep Tissue Massage. Deep tissue has allowed me to delve into the sports world and gain invaluable experience treating sports injuries. I then trained in Pregnancy Massage, helping mothers to be to feel special, pampered and at ease. Most recently, I trained in Meditation Instruction which I hope will enable me to bring a little bit of peace to those who I welcome into the studio.
