What does life look when you don't have boundaries? It can be exhausting. Do you find that you take responsibility for other peoples actions or feelings? Do find it difficult to say no? Are you concerned about what people would say or think if you did say no? Do you take on extra tasks at work then struggle to keep up with everything you have to do? Do you feel resentful or disrespected?
Life without boundaries can feel out of control and confusing.

On Mothers Day we celebrate our Mums, and the women who are, and have been, like mothers to us. For many it is a lovely day, but not for everyone.
If you find Mothers Day difficult please know that you're not alone. Whether it's because you've lost your Mum, you don't have a good relationship with her, or you're separated by distance. And for those of you who want to be Mums but are struggling with infertility, miscarriage or the death of your child. If you find it hard at this time of year for any other reason too. Take care of yourself today, acknowledge the hurt and your struggles and remember that it's just one day. Tomorrow is coming.

This week we're looking at the importance of taking breaks at work. Many of us can feel guilty for taking time out from our busy working lives. If you're working from home it can also be difficult because you may feel that you constantly need to prove that you're working.
Taking time out during your working day is good for your mental and physical health. It can help you to keep your concentration levels up which will help you to improve your overall productivity. When you are feeling stuck in a work issue, stepping away to clear your mind and re-focus can help you make better decisions and find resolutions to probelms. Regular breaks are good for helping us to manage and relieve stress.
When you take time out it can be as simple as going to make yourself a cup of tea, getting outside and taking a few deep breaths, doing a few stretching exercises to relive tension in your body and eating a healthy lunch. So give yourself permission to take a break today, you deserve to take good care of yourself.

We often think about self-care in terms of our mental health, but it includes our physical health too. Our mental health often affects our physical health, and our physical health can affect our mental health. It's important to be aware of our general health and what we can to do improve it. It may be that you need to think about taking exercise, eating healthily or getting a good nights sleep. Have you been putting off seeing your doctor about something? Getting the right medical advice is self-care. What do you need to put in place to improve your physical health? Take good care of yourself.

When you think about self-care you may not immediately consider your support network but it’s really important for you to have people who you can turn to and talk to. A good support network can be your cheerleaders when you step outside of your comfort zone to try something new. They can give you fresh perspectives and can help you work out what decisions you need to make. They can encourage you and help you to cope when things go wrong. We all need to have people in our lives who will celebrate with us when things go well, and will support us when things get tough.

What does self-care look like for you? It seems like a simple question but we are surrounded by images of what self-care looks like for others and we can get confused. We may feel that if we aren’t doing something that someone else is doing then we aren’t really engaging in self-care. The truth is that it will be different for each of us. What are the things that help you, what recharges your batteries? It could be reading a book, going for a walk, eating good food, going to the gym, going to the hairdresser, having your nails done, gardening, having a nap…..the list goes on and on. Pay attention to what helps you.

It may seem like the term “self-care” is everywhere with images of bubble baths and mugs of steaming hot chocolate. What is self-care and why is it so important? It’s vitally important for both your mental and physical health.
Is self-care selfish? This is a question that I’m asked a lot. Many of us live busy lives, we work, take care of our families and friends, our homes and our finances. If you think about how much time and energy you put into everything that you do, including work and family responsibilities it could feel overwhelming. Where and how do you recharge your batteries? The truth is that you can’t give out what you don’t have, and if you try to keep doing that you will quickly burn out and not be able to give to anyone. This is why self-care is so important. It’s easy to forget that we also have needs when we’re so busy working and taking care of others. Self-care reminds us and other people that our needs are important. The need to rest and recharge is vital and this is why self-care is so important. It really is more that bubble baths and hot chocolate.

Today is commonly known as blue Monday. The third Monday of January is traditionally known as the gloomiest day of the year because of the cold, dark nights, blues after Christmas and credit card bills becoming due.
Debt can have a detrimental effect on mental health. There can be a sense of shame in being in debt when you are struggling to pay it back, it can feel very lonely and isolating. Often people don’t ask for help with their debt until they are in arrears with their mortgages, rent, council tax and utilities. We feel that we should be able to deal with our debt but it can feel like it’s getting out of control very quickly. It’s much better to get debt advice before you get to crisis point. Help is available from organisations like Citizens Advice, StepChange or Christians Against Poverty, who all give help and advice free of charge. If you make one new year’s resolution then getting on top of debt is a good one. It will help reduce stress and improve your mental health.

How are you feeling now that Christmas is over and everything is getting back to normal? As we take down the decorations that have cheered up our homes, and we return to the everyday routines and pressures of our live we can feel a bit flat. It's common to feel a bit down as January marches on with the dark mornings and cold weather. It can feel like it's a long time until spring.
It can be helpful to get out into the daylight - however little there is - and get some exercise. eating healthily and getting enough sleep is important, so is keeping in contact with friends and family. Talking about how you feel with someone you trust can help you to cope. Let taking care of yourself, whatever that looks like for you, be a priority.

It's hard at any time of the year when you feel lonely, and Christmas can make it feel even tougher. It's exhausting when you feel that you have to put on a brave face and pretend that everything's OK when it isn't. How do you cope if work keeps you going and then your workplace closes for the Christmas break. How do you manage when all you seem to see around you is other people having a great time while you're alone? Remember that Christmas day is just one day, you can get through it. Choose good things to watch on TV and, if you can, avoid those programmes and adverts that bring you down. Avoiding social media for a day or two may also help. Get some treats in for you to enjoy on the day. Above all it's important that you show yourself compassion, acknowledge how you feel, take it slowly and remember that you're more resilient than you thought.

Many of us will be looking forward to spending time with family and friends over Christmas, but what if you’re not? At Christmas we may feel that we have to spend more time with colleagues at the work Christmas party than we would choose to, or with family members who don’t get on with each other, or who we struggle to get on with. When we add the extra stress we feel at this time of the year, along with alcohol which often plays a part in most of our celebrations it’s easy to see how arguments and conflict can start or get worse. You can’t change how other people behave, or what they think and say but you can be mindful of your responses. It can be helpful to limit the time that you spend with people that you really struggle to be around, take some time to step away if you’re feeling overwhelmed and think ahead of time about how you might deal with some situations that tend to come up.

Christmas is a busy time of year, whether you’re planning a big family get together, attending Christmas work events, making sure you have presents bought and wrapped or visiting family. Taking care of yourself is important at any time of the year but at Christmas we often forget about ourselves and our mental health. At this time of year it’s good to make some time for yourself. Sometimes it’s helpful to think about our time as a limited resource that we need to spend wisely. What would it look like for you to intentionally take time out to take care of yourself, taking a bit of time to stop, breathe, get some exercise, take a walk or whatever helps you to replenish emotional energy?
