PAY ATTENTION TO POSSIBLE HEALTH CONCERNS AS WE GEAR TOWARDS THE FESTIVE SEASON.
1. For those who would travel long distances, by road or air: There is something called DVT or PE( clot formation in the veins) that can occur following travelling long distances. Anybody who gets it may have leg swelling/pain or chest pain, shortness of breath and or coughing out blood. This is an emergency that must be assessed and treated immediately.
2. For those with chronic illnesses: Remember to travel with your medications and take them as planned with your doctor. There is a chance to forget going with them or not taking them because of the euphoria of the season. For an individual with Diabetes or Hypertension, abandoning medications could be catastrophic.
3. Dietary Restriction: Remember to stay away from foods you normally do not eat because of health grounds and other reasons. There would be pressure to eat what others are having to please them. Please do not displease your health to make people happy.
4. Alcohol Consumption Restriction: There would be the temptation to ingest lots of it during this season because one is on holiday or for the reason that it is supplied in large amounts and freely at one’s disposal. For those who take it, the maximum expected quantity for an individual in a week is 14units( 6pints of beer or 1 and half bottle of wine). Binge drinking could cause lost immediate health complications like Acute Pancreatitis, Acute Gout, DKA( for diabetics), intestinal bleeding, etc.
5. If you are going to an area where you may be more exposed to malaria bites than usual, you can take malaria preventive medications before leaving.
Finally, ensure you pay attention to your body by identifying any strange feelings occurring and act promptly without procrastination.
Thanks.
