Is Dad's mental health the conversation we're not having?????
I'm very aware when I write that I don't want to exclude the value that Dad's, Step-Dad's and Grandad's can bring in a child's life.
I'm also aware that a lot of men, carry their struggle alone. Men are so much less likely to share that they are having a tough time generally- let alone on the parenting front.
The expectation of what it means to be a Dad has changed over the generations and this can put an awful lot of pressure on men to try to be everything to everyone.
Maybe the once traditional role as the Dad being the financial provider doesn't fit in your home set up and you are still figuring out where that leaves you.
Or maybe you are the main financial provider and that feels like a lot of pressure to keep going, and keep everyone afloat.
Dad's have you taken your eye off the ball when it comes to your mental health or are you busy over there being
"strong" for your family.
Let's break the silence, I encourage you to talk to your mates, work colleagues or family if you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or flat and unmotivated.

If you feel that's something you might struggle to do with people you know, or you feel you would like a more professional level of support. Counselling sessions with me offer you the opportunity to share how you're feeling, say the things you dread saying to your loved ones and give you a space that is dedicated to you and your wellbeing.

As Men's Mental Health Month comes to a close, a reminder that my counselling door is open to you Dad's too.

What even is a perfect parent anyway????

After I was reflecting on this subject last week, lo and behold I flicked Loose Women on while I was having my lunch earlier and this is exactly what they were discussing.

They shared that according to a recent survey 63% of parents put themselves under pressure to get everything right.

For me this begs the questions:
🤔 how do you know if it's right?
🤔 who decides what's right and wrong?
🤔 how on earth is it even possible to get everything right?????

Sue Cleaver said some things I loved.

"Children don't remember perfection".

"I think we don't all get it right, l've made mistakes, we've all made mistakes." Also "rather than beating ourselves up all the time, we need to be compassionate with ourselves".

I absolutely agree with this sentiment Sue.

The pressure seems to ramp up on parents even more this time of year, and it feels exhausting as well as unattainable.

Also, I'll let you into a little secret. My own children remember all the Christmas' holidays, events etc where things went wrong or not to plan with really fond memories and a whole lot of laughter. Do they remember the occasions where everything went smoothly- not a chance!!

So create some messy memories in a totally imperfect way.

If you are struggling to drop the perfectionist label - why not come my way and book in Counselling with me.
A recovering perfectionist myself.

Why is change often met with resistance?

If you struggle with this you are not alone.

I've had a lot of changes in my life recently that were out of my control.

Making another change that was in my control was a step too far at the time. I pushed back when my hairdresser gently suggested it was time to embrace what was happening underneath, I just wasn't ready.

On Friday after having a couple of weeks to settle myself again, I had a hair appointment again.
My hairdresser got a bit tougher with me and laid it on the table, I could keep going as I was, but ultimately it would take more time and energy to maintain the status quo, yes I had been fighting against accepting the inevitable, but now I was in a space where I was ready to embrace the change.

Are you fighting against change, using more time and precious energy trying to keep things as they are.

Are you ready for a gentle nudge from a counsellor who can lay down a challenge when needed, to help you embrace the change that will benefit you going forward.

If you are ready to accept the challenge why not come and have an initial counselling
consultation call with me for free (15 mins) and if you are in the preparation stage and not quite there yet, you can book one in for the New Year now, so that you are ready to get going in 2026.

Thank you@strawberrylace_hair83 for nudging me to take the plunge, I love it

Good Morning Parents, Step-Parents, Grandparents
Have you considered the benefits of coming to counselling, to work through whatever challenges are going on for you right now?
It's a great way to role-model to your children that talking about your problems, emotions and getting curious about yourself, your actions and your reactions can be so beneficial.
And the big hope is by showing yourself this level of care, it will increase your capacity to show up for your children with a different level of empathy and allow you to grow your relationship with your children to a greater depth.
Email me for more information or to book in your first counselling session.
I am now taking bookings for January 2026, either in person in Dartford or Sidcup. Or Online anywhere in the UK

When I work with clients online, l have a little ritual.
1. Check my diary (didn't show actual page here as obviously client confidentiality is incredibly important)
2. Check emails and messages in case of any cancellations I may have missed.
3. Get my chair comfy, make sure I have water nearby and I can see my clock to keep track of the session time, so you don't have to.
4. Smell a candle that will help me feel calm but also alert. This Sables Roses smell works for me.
5. Give my squishy penguin a squeeze to release any negative energy I might be holding.
It's really important for me as a counsellor that I get myself ready to be in the right space, so that I can offer you the counselling space you deserve.
