⭐️ Tummy Time is so much more than building upper body, hand and neck strength.
It has major benefits for the rest of the body too.

👶🏽 Sensory - being tummy down improves baby’s access to different sensory input, textures, surfaces etc. This promotes sensory integration, cognitive development and eye-hand coordination

👶🏽 Vision - Promotes visual development, particularly depth perception. Baby’s eyes are encouraged to track from close to further away, promoting the development of depth perception.

👶🏽 Digestion - pressure and movement on baby’s tummy can help move gas bubbles if wind is an issue. Giving more space to the stomach in an extended position can help reduce reflux.

👶🏽 Breathing - Strengthens the muscles used for breathing around the rib cage and elongating the diaphragm can encourage deeper breathing and healthy development of breathing patterns.

👶🏽 Cranial health - any time your baby has less pressure on their skull helps reduce the risk of Plagiocephaly (flat area on their head). Plagiocephaly can have knock on effects on development due to baby developing tight muscles, reduced movement and side preferences leading to asymmetrical development.

So many benefits, and this is just scratching the surface!
If you would like support with helping your baby love tummy time then please get in touch or book on to one of my Tummy Time Tribe sessions.

Just sat here while my kids play (iykyk where this is!) and thinking about how good it is for kids to move their bodies through this really active play.

😀 Strength, coordination, motor planning vestibular stimulation, confidence, physical and mental challenge (the drop slide!).

Kids love moving their bodies!

Babies crave movement too but need help and support to do this to build their bodies and brains. Have you seen how they love being swayed, ‘thrown’ up in the air, moved, tumbled upside down? This feeds their need to move before they can do it themselves.

You can start gently from newborn by varying holds, swaying and then increase movement as their head control improves. By 5-6 months they usually enjoy and crave lots of movement!

Movement and the opportunity to move is so important for babies. Time on the floor is the main way they will learn how to move themselves.

What movement games does your baby enjoy most? Let me know! 😊
