I realised it's been such a long time since my last post; and it got me thinking about why that was, what got in the way? Asking those questions of myself I notice those questions are there with curiosity not judgement or chastising myself for "not having done...".

And that, feels great (a little new too).

Do you manage to stay curious about what's going on for you? Instead of jumping to what you should do or be.

Authenticity - a word I find I use again and again to describe what I value, what I strive to live to and how I wish to be in connection with the world around me.

Soren Kierkegaard has much thought and theory attributed to him. One that really sparks my interest is how he speaks about the human experience "as a constant process of becoming" and his associated concepts of authenticity. This quote really spoke to me in how I adapt myself when faced with a 'problem' or feeling when I can now with new tools, thoughts and ideas instead experience the reality and stay in the authenticity of things.

I'm super pleased to say my room at Dartington is now ready to welcome people. I did get the keys a couple of weeks ago but there was a bit to sort and organise. If you know anyone who might like to join me there for counselling or coaching please pass on my details. www.southwest-counselling.co.uk

Changing seasons, changing focus

Do you remember these images from school? I can't remember in which context they were shown to us but they are so familiar to me.

In October I begin my Level 5 Gestalt training. Very simply put Gestalt Therapy helps us to look at where and why we might be stuck, how it happened and how we can free ourselves. It's work that is grounded in the here and now and concentrates on how our experiences affect us in the present rather than based on assumptions from past experiences.

There are many different points and techniques within Gestalt Therapy and so much more to say, hear, read and learn. I have, in preparation, been having a good read. One of these techniques/ points is figure-ground which I've been 'toying' with and feeling into. These images are an illustration of the figure-ground. fig 1 A young or old woman fig 2. Faces in profile or a vase. They illustrate how we identify a figure from the background. This technique/ point helps us to explore how within our lives we have and develop different levels of focus either from an internal experience or external stimuli. Again all very simply put.

This has me thinking about how my focus gets pulled from the inner and the outer. I'm noticing how the change in seasons can often be where my figure-ground begins to change focus; especially in preparation for some new learning. Gosh if you made it to here thanks for reading my musings x

Self-compassion - what does it really mean?

Finding self-compassion has been a theme so often present in my life and something that I know others struggle with too. This article from The University of Utah explores how to practice self-compassion. Their research shows "Self-compassion is one of the most powerful sources of coping and resilience available to us".

Are you interested in meditation but don't know where to start?

Have you tried the Plum Village app? It's great, there are loads of free resources including meditations from 5 mins up to an hour. Some are guided journeys or use affirmations to start your day and there are some lovely soundscapes too.

Do share any other good resources you think others might enjoy.

I do love a little read in the morning, today's read an article of an interview with Oprah speaking about what confidence means to her.

"Most people think vulnerability is weakness. I live in the space of vulnerability... and that is what has made me so successful.

I think vulnerability is... the cornerstone of confidence. Allow yourself to take the risk, to be open, to live as a whole-hearted person. Do that, and you recognize that you're just like everybody else, and that gives you the confidence to be yourself.

Which is all you really need in life: to be more of yourself."

Always great to read something so simply put, thanks for the words Oprah.
