A lot of my clients ask when is the best time to have a sports massage.
The short answer is…that it depends.
Here’s a quick guide to help you get the timing right, whether you’re racing, training hard, or just looking after your body:
✅ Pre-Event Massage is ideal for warming up and prepping your muscles for an event.
This type of massage is lighter, more stimulating, and designed to get blood flowing and muscles activated, without leaving you sore or sluggish.
They should be booked anywhere between 24 and 72 hours before your event and are great for reducing pre-race nerves and improving performance on the day.
✅ Post-Event Massage is perfect for easing DOMS, reducing inflammation and boosting recovery.
Having a massage 24-72 hours after your event gives your body time to start the natural healing process and then supports recovery, flush out waste products and helps you bounce back faster.
✅ Massage between training blocks is ideal for managing niggles, reducing muscle tightness and preventing injury.
Depending on your training load having a massage every 2-4 weeks can help keep things moving well, prevent injury and keep your performance on track.
✅ Massage anytime for general maintenance can help reduce general tension, posture issues, reduce stress and improve your mental wellbeing.
Book these whenever your body (or brain!) is asking for a reset!
Massage isn't just for athletes; regular sessions can help with desk-related stiffness, day-to-day stress, or simply getting ahead of any tension before it builds.
