🚨 IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT: Botulism Cases Linked to Cosmetic Injections 🚨

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an urgent alert following 38 cases of iatrogenic botulism reported between June and mid-July 2025 — mostly in the North East and North West of England.

These serious cases have been linked to cosmetic procedures involving botulinum toxin, often carried out in homes or salons, using unlicensed products (many sourced from abroad, especially South Korea).

❗ Key facts:

• Symptoms included blurred vision, muscle weakness, and difficulty swallowing
• Several people were admitted to critical care
• Most treatments were performed outside medical clinics
• Products used were unlicensed and not regulated for UK use

🧠 Botulism is rare, but it’s a medical emergency. Early recognition and treatment can be life-saving.

Today we mark VE Day – a day to honour and remember.

We pause to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who fought and those who were lost in the fight for peace.

We also remember the vital role women played during the war – not only as nurses, codebreakers, and in the armed forces, but also as factory workers, engineers, and farm labourers. With so many men away at the front, women stepped into roles previously denied to them, proving their strength, skill, and capability.

Their contribution didn’t just help win the war – it helped shift the course of history, laying the foundations for greater equality in the workplace and beyond. Their courage paved the way for independence, progress, and empowerment — values that still guide us today in how we care for others.

Today, we remember. We honour. And we remain inspired by their legacy.

📣 BIG industry update – but no change at my clinic.

🩺 New NMC Guidance on Remote Prescribing – What It Means for My Clinic
This week, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) confirmed new guidance that from 1 June 2025, nurse and midwife prescribers will be required to carry out face-to-face consultations before prescribing any non-surgical cosmetic medicines – including botox, weight-loss injections and prescription skin care.

This update follows extensive research and engagement with professionals, businesses, and members of the public. The findings highlighted major concerns around remote prescribing, with many patients unaware of who was actually prescribing or administering their treatments – and whether those individuals were medically qualified at all.

The NMC concluded it is “not appropriate” to prescribe cosmetic medicines remotely (via phone, email, video, or online forms), even for follow-ups or repeat prescriptions. The change is designed to better align with other regulators, like the General Medical Council, and – crucially – to strengthen public safety.

🔒 At my clinic, nothing is changing.

* I have only ever conducted face-to-face consultations.
* I do not prescribe to non-medics.
* I believe that safe, ethical medical aesthetics must always begin with a full, in-person clinical assessment.

These principles are non-negotiable and form the foundation of my practice.
While some business owners may view face-to-face requirements as outdated, I welcome this move. It’s a vital step forward in tackling unsafe practice, unregulated environments, and overly accessible treatments that put the public at risk.

If you’re unsure about who is prescribing or administering your treatments – ask questions. You deserve to know you’re in safe, qualified hands.
