Darwen gas leak - an update on our operations
Dear relatives, colleagues, and the wider community,
This letter (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lSdYcyRRWSQHyrD0LSeUy5DM_IBmi0e8/view?usp=drive_link) provides an update on the major incident declared in Darwen. Further news and developments can be found on Lancs Live and the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
A fractured gas main is currently affecting the entire town of Darwen. The area surrounding the care home has been cordoned off, leading to the evacuation of many properties. Uniquely, the care home has not been evacuated and is receiving comprehensive support from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, the Fire Brigade, Public Health, and the Ambulance Service.
Residents are prepared for potential evacuation, with essential items such as spare clothing and medication readily available. However, the current plan is to maintain residents within the care home. This decision is influenced by the fact that the fractured main affects the gas supply to the entire town, including vital businesses and factories. Cadent is working to maintain a reduced gas pressure to the care home to ensure the continued operation of heating systems.
Should an evacuation of the care home become necessary, the local authority will lead and coordinate this effort.
A specialist team from Cadent, responsible for managing such repairs for the gas company, is required to address the fracture.
We will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
