Thousands of men who are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer will now benefit from taking abiraterone, a lifesaving hormone therapy given as a tablet, after it was approved for use on the NHS.

Professor Noel Clarke, Consultant Urologist at The Christie, is co-principal investigator of STAMPEDE, the trial that initially proved the effectiveness of abiraterone as a novel therapy for treating men with high-risk locally advanced prostate cancer.

The study, which started testing multiple prostate cancer treatments in 2004, was the first ever to develop a new way of conducting medical trials, including those in cancer.

It was recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Research in 2025 as one of the most impactful trials in medicine.

Professor Clarke said: ā€œOur research showed that after just two years on the drug, the chances of the cancer coming back were halved and the risk of death was reduced by 40%, which has been life-changing for so many men and their families. This latest decision will see around 8,000 more men a year benefitting from the drug, which is fantastic."

There is no moving on from the death of a baby or child. Unfortunately we hear too often from bereaved families who feel as though their loved ones are urging them to ā€˜move on’, and ā€˜focus on the future’.

Often, this comes from a place of care. You want to see your loved one doing and feeling better. It hurts to see them hurting. But pushing someone to move on can make them feel as though their baby is being forgotten, or there is no space for their grief in your relationship. What they need most is to know their child is remembered, and that their grief has space to be honoured. šŸ’«

Instead, here are three things that are helpful for bereaved families:

1. Always mention the child’s name. If you knew them, share any memories you may have.

2. Ask how the person feels that day. Grief comes in waves – every day is different. Allow them to express how they feel, even if these feelings seem intense and frightening.

3. Ask them if they want to talk. Be prepared to hear the same details again and again, this may help process what happened.
