Let me tell you a story of a special girl, Mariami and her family. Mariami has Down's Syndrome. In Ukraine such children are called Sunny Children because they are open, friendly and smiley.
When the war in Ukraine started, the family had to run, war... horrible brutal war, not a "special military operation".
Although none of them had ever been abroad, to save the lives of their 2 daughters, they had to make a difficult decision to leave their beloved country. They left relatives and friends behind, they left work, school, home. Carrying only 2 suitcases for 4 of them, that is all they had when they fled on the 24th of February 2022.
The first big stop was Italy, one room in a house where 30 other displaced families were placed. Living on €20 per day per family, with no work, no support for a child with Down's Syndrome, difficult, not easy... Reading the disturbing news from Ukraine, talking to grandparents worried for their lives. Despite this, they are happy, they are safe, they are together.
3 months passed, and the opportunity came to move to the UK. New challenges and documents, 3 more months before they could board the plane and say good buy to 6 months in Italy.
A new adventure begins, the whole family is worried but hopeful. A new country, new language, welcoming home, good school for little sister. This change was not without problems, of course and we are still facing them. It will take another year to assess all of Mariami's needs. It takes a lot of time to get appropriate medical treatment for her.
Together they don't stop, don't lose hope, they have started new life, are learning new language. Will there be a happy ending, we'll see?
None of this was easy, but determination to meet these challenges shown by Mariami helped them to get through. Always a smile, always a cuddle, she is not afraid of anything, happy to meet new people, an absolute joy to be with!
