True or False… 👁️

False!

Eye tests can be conducted using various methods that are suitable for your child. Free NHS sight tests are available for children under 16 and for young people under 19 in full time education.

Even if your child’s vision seems good, it’s worth bringing them for a full sight test when they reach school age to make sure there aren’t any vision issues which could affect their early school years.📚

❓What is Glaucoma?
The most common form of glaucoma is almost always painless and can damage your eye sight without you knowing.

In some cases, the pressure of the fluid is raised and it damages the optic nerve. In other cases, although the pressure is not raised, there may be a weakness which causes similar nerve damage (normal tension glaucoma).

🙋🏼Who is at a higher risk?

- It principally affects those aged 40 & over.
- Glaucoma can run in families (a close relative of someone with glaucoma is 4x more likely to also have glaucoma)
- You are very short sighted
-You are of African or Afro-Caribbean descent

🙋🏽‍♂️What are the types of glaucoma?

The main type is called ‘Primary Open Angle Glaucoma’.

Angle Closure Glaucoma is more uncommon - this has sudden onset and is painful.

🙋🏻‍♀️What are the treatment options?

Treatment options include drops, laser treatment and/or surgery. There are also monitoring schemes in place.

It is important for everyone to have regular eye examinations.

DIABETIC AWARENESS WEEK 💙

Diabetes can cause temporary or permanent changes to the eye, including blurred vision and Diabetic Eye Disease such as diabetic retinopathy & diabetic macular oedema.

You are at a higher risk of Diabetic Eye Disease if you’ve had diabetes for a long time or your diabetes is not well controlled.

💡What can I do to help?

- Attend regular eye examinations.
- Take care to control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Exercsie regularly and eat a balanced diet.

In the UK, the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme aimed to detect & monitor changes to the retina using digital fundus photography.
