What a woman 💪🏻
We have been watching the court process unfold in France as Gisèle Pelicot returns to court to face one of her ra**sts who appealed his conviction.
After almost a decade of being drugged and r***d in her own home, she returned to face a justice system and a culture that still needed convincing that an unconscious woman cannot consent.
Husamettin Dogan, lost his appeal yesterday. His prison sentence was increased from 9 to 10 years. Even after being shown footage of Gisèle’s motionless body, her breathing shallow, her life at risk, he told the court: “It was just a sexual act, not r**e.”
Her lawyer told the jury what the world should already know:
“Consent is personal, not delegated. Consent is obtained directly and not by proxy from a husband.”
And Gisèle, in an act courage, looked her ra**st in the eye and said:
“You haven’t understood. When are you going to recognise you r***d me? It’s a crime to r**e an unconscious woman. When did I ever give you consent? Never.”
The prosecutor told the court:
“Now we must change r**e culture to a culture of consent.”
At OWN, we could not agree more because consent does not expire with age. It cannot be signed away in marriage. And it can never, ever be taken from someone who is unconscious.
Gisèle Pelicot changed the conversation when she said: “Shame must change sides.” For every older woman dismissed, disbelieved, or dehumanised, her voice echoes: We will not be silenced. We will not be shamed.
The fight to end violence against women, including older women, continues.
