Funeral fact!
Graveyards in victorian England were hotspots for criminal activity. Graverobbing being a lucrative income because of items deceased were buried with, from jewellery to heurlooms, as well as their bodies being sold on the black market to doctors to further their expertise and exhibit their skills!
The more elite of society had their own stringent plans such as 'mortsafes' (cages we still see over graves today).
Graveyard Bells were also commonplace, with a piece of string lowered in the coffin, attached to a bell on the surface, as a secondary plan for any premature burial, (a practice I can assure you does NOT happen today)!
Night watchmen were introduced in graveyards to ward off such behaviour of "body snatchers" and also listen for any bells that may ti**le! We believe this is where the term 'dead ringer' was coined.
