It's time to reintroduce myself as it's been a while!
My name's Amy and I'm an integrative counsellor working in Derby (and online!).
'Integrative' just means that I don't use one rigid theoretical approach - I'm trained in a number of approaches and I adapt to each client's needs and preferences. Therapy, how I do it, is a partnership with each client.
I genuinely adore my job and see it as such an epic honour to walk alongside my clients on their individual journeys.
I pride myself on being relaxed, genuine and approachable.
I lived and trained in East London before I returned to my Derbyshire roots and I love how my training in London gave me a really grounded, diverse, culturally aware foundation as a therapist. At the same time, it's a joy to be back within a stone's throw of the beautiful scenery and views of the Peak District.
If you're looking for a counsellor and you think that I might be a good fit, then reach out for a free consultation. I'd love to meet you 😊

Connellycreations is such a lovely person but is unfortunately going through a tough time with her health. Anyone who has seen photos of my counselling room will recognise two macrame wall hangings hand made by her. She's selling up some stock at the moment as she'll soon be having cancer treatment so do have a look at her page (but note that orders would have to be placed very soon via facebook in order to be posted out before treatment starts, otherwise stock will be going onto her Etsy page for a family member to look after for a bit).
I've actually never met her but sometimes you get a good vibe off someone and want to support them regardless. Both wall hangings are a beautiful addition to my counselling room and I've just been lucky enough to win a gorgeous acoustic guitar holder in her giveaway/competition x

September and October mark a LOT of professional anniversaries for me:
- Five years (I think!) since starting my PGDip in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy.
- Three years since handing in my notice to leave primary school teaching.
- One year since starting 6 months online training with one of my therapeutic heroes - Deb Dana.
- And now one year in my very own gorgeous little office (this time last year it was an empty shell and I was buying and building a lot of furniture!), which is now used to see clients for in-person therapy as well as online.

When was the last time you made time for play?

The main reason for us to make time for play and joy is that it's loads of fun. πŸ˜‰ But if we want to get technical, here are some other reasons:

- Reduces stress levels
- Boosts a sense of connection with others (and in this case, nature)
- Releases endorphins
- Improves resilience in challenging times
- Some studies have shown that it might help brain functioning and memory to continue to integrate play activities into our adult lives
- Moves us away from 'survival mode' into rest, connection and joy
- Boots creativity, problem solving and the ability to 'think outside of the box'

How can you integrate more play into your adult life?

I've added a little 🌈 magic into the green theme of my counselling room 🌱 with a new emotions wheel cushion, some fiddle/fidget toys and a new way of displaying my emotions cards.
What's your favourite colour and why? πŸ€”

I spoke about wellbeing and avoiding burnout on a webinar for teachers a few weeks ago but its also relevant for anyone πŸ™‚
The irony is that here I am talking about burnout, yet the end of term germs have got me and I'm experiencing the headcold of doom with just two more days in the school job to go πŸ˜‚πŸ€§
I'm taking my own advice though by resting. Plans for tonight have been cancelled, my boss and colleagues have been informed that I'm not firing on all cylinders so that they have a realistic idea of what I can achieve, if I get worse then I'll ring in sick and when I'm well rested and Summer kicks in then hopefully I'll be able to look at those things which bring me joy to build myself back up again.
Managing our physical, emotional and mental health is a constant process. I'll be the first to say that I'm not perfect at it. I don't think any of us are. But if we review and tune into our needs regularly and with self-compassion then we're on the right track. Take the time to look after YOU. πŸ’™

It can be really useful to think of burnout as a scale and to regularly assess where you are on this scale. Ideally we want to be in the green zone, but we all know that life is more complex than that and its sometimes easier said than done!
If you're drifting into the other zones then its time to increase your self care as a non-negotiable. Think of self-care as 'ways of finding connection.' This might be ways of connecting with the present moment (mindfulness), ways of connecting with yourself physically (exercise is a great way to complete the stress response, which in turn can make us feel less overwhelmed and anxious), connecting with others, connecting with your own internal process and emotions (counselling and/or journalling can be really useful here), connecting with creativity, connecting with nature or connecting with whatever brings you joy.
If you find yourself in the dark orange or red zone then consider reaching out to organisations who can help, such as Samaritans.
If you are having self-harming or suicidal thoughts, please ask for an emergency appointment with your GP or if necessary call 999 or present at A&E. If you can, also speak to a trusted loved one.

I wish I knew who created this graphic! It floats around social media but is never credited (theres a reference for the inspiration at the bottom though). If you know then please do let me know so that I can credit them!
