Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💗 | Awareness Around Every Corner 🎀

To round off our October awareness series, we’re proud to showcase the brilliant work of Rachel Carrington, our Breast Specialist Nurse, and Rachel Sharratt, Senior Mammographer, who have created a series of beautiful and informative breast cancer awareness displays throughout Nuffield Health Derby Hospital.

You’ll find these displays in key areas including Reception, the Bamford Suite, and the Staff Canteen — helping to spark important conversations, encourage self-checks, and keep breast health top of mind for both patients and staff.

These displays are a powerful reminder that awareness saves lives. A huge thank you to both Rachels for their creativity, dedication, and passion in supporting this vital cause 💗

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💗 | Know the Signs, Check Yourself!

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with nearly 50,000 women diagnosed each year.
Thanks to advances in medicine and greater awareness, more women than ever are surviving. Early detection is key — the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Breast cancer can occur at any stage of life, so it’s important to check your breasts regularly — ideally once a month — and be familiar with what’s normal for you.

🔍 It’s not just lumps, be aware of these other signs:

• Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin
• Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling
• A ni**le that has changed position or become inverted
• Clear or bloody fluid leaking from the ni**le
• Constant pain in the breast or armpit

How to check your breasts:
1. Look in the mirror with arms on hips
2. Raise your arms and look again
3. Lean forward and check for skin changes
4. Check for ni**le discharge
5. Feel your breasts lying down
6. Feel while standing or sitting (many prefer doing this in the shower)

If you notice anything unusual, don’t panic - most changes aren’t cancer. But it’s always best to speak to a doctor.

🎗️🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷 🎗️

This is the first in a series of posts shining a light on the importance of breast awareness and early detection.

Being breast-aware is vital. While most breast symptoms aren’t caused by cancer, it’s always best to get any changes checked by a specialist. Some signs to look out for include:

• A lump or thickening in the breast
• Changes in breast size or shape
• Inverted ni**les or ni**le discharge
• Skin dimpling or puckering
• Persistent pain in the breast or armpit
• Swelling around the collarbone or underarm

If something doesn’t feel right — don’t wait. Early reassurance or diagnosis can make all the difference.🩷

Did you know that men are generally less likely to seek medical help than women? Traditional ideas about masculinity and the fear of bad news often hold men back from check-ups, which can mean missing early signs of health issues.

65% of men put off seeking medical help as long as possible - and even when they do go, 37% admit to withholding information. 📉

It's important to remember that doctors are trained professionals who know how to make patients feel comfortable and supported, no matter the issue!

Research shows that men are less likely than women to seek medical help or advice. Traditional views on masculinity and fear of bad news are just two of the most common reasons men give for putting off check-ups. This can lead to potentially harmful con...
