Safer sleep in winter. The weather is colling down now and winter can be a challenging time for families. With the cost of living crisis and worries about heating our homes, it’s understandable to worry about keeping your baby warm. The recommended room temperature for a baby’s sleep space is 16 – 20°C. This can be harder to maintain when it’s cold outside.

While it can be tempting to wrap your baby up to keep them warm and cosy, it’s important to remember that it’s possible for them to overheat, and this increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In fact, research has shown that babies are safer when they’re a little bit cooler, rather than too hot.

Use these guidelines for safer sleep for your baby in winter shared from The Lullaby Trust

When safer sleeping for your baby in the winter, it's important not to use too many layers which may increase the risk of SIDS...

Don’t forget your daily dose of vitamin D this winter!
Everyone should take a vitamin D supplement during the colder months — but did you know some babies and young children need it all year round?
👶 Babies (birth to 1 year) need 8.5–10 micrograms daily, if they are:
- Breastfed
- Formula-fed but drinking less than 500ml of formula a day
🧒 Children aged 1–4 years need 10 micrograms daily all year.
💡 Families eligible for the Healthy Start scheme can get free vitamin D supplements. Find out more 👉 https://www.healthystart.nhs.uk/getting-vitamins/

Are you decorating your home this Halloween? 🎃👻
Light-up decorations such as pumpkins, cauldrons, torches and wands are fantastic for creating a spooktactular atmosphere. But many of these items are powered by button batteries which can badly hurt or kill a child if swallowed.
That’s why it’s so important when buying button battery-powered Halloween novelties that you check the battery compartment is secured with a screw or similar fastener to prevent children gaining access.

❗️Mastitis means inflammation of the breast.❗️

Would you know the signs ?

*A localised area in the breast which is painful to the touch, often in the outer upper area. Some mums might notice a change of colour or a red area on their breast.
*A lumpy breast which feels hot to touch.
*The whole breast aches and may appear swollen and skin may be reddened or darker, depending on skin tone.
*Flu like symptoms – aching, increased temperature, shivering, feeling tearful and tired (Jahanfar et al., 2013). This feeling can sometimes start very suddenly and get worse very quickly.

*NB You may not have all of the above signs during mastitis.*

To find out how to prevent and treat this, read the information shared from The Breastfeeding Network (UK)

Information on mastitis and breastfeeding, updated December 2022.
