Moving to a new school can bring up a big mix of emotions, including feeling nervous and excited! Building our resilience, and understanding how to look after our wellbeing, can help us to face these emotions during this time of change.

‘Stepping forward‘ was created for The Resilience Rucksacks project (University of Reading, Charlie Waller Institute) and Boys in Mind. They created a unique stop-motion animation film following the journey of a Year 7 pupil and their friend on their way to Secondary School for the first time.

💢 The Anger Iceberg 💢
When a child shows anger, what we see on the surface is just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath, there are often hidden feelings driving that big emotion.
🌊 On top, we might notice:
😠 Shouting
🙅 Defiance
😤 Tantrums
🌊 But underneath could be:
😔 Sadness
😨 Fear
😞 Embarrassment
😥 Loneliness
😟 Worry
😢 Feeling hurt
💡 Remember: anger is often a signal, not the root problem. When we look beneath the surface, we can respond with empathy, support, and understanding—helping children feel safe and heard. ❤️

If your child is struggling with anger, and you would like some help and support with this. Text our chat health line on: 07507 327754 🤳

✨🎒 Supporting Little Ones Starting School 🎒✨

Starting school is such an exciting milestone, but it can also feel a little overwhelming.
Here are some gentle ways to make the transition smoother:

👟 Practice the morning routine together so it feels familiar.
📚 Read books about starting school—stories can help children process new experiences.
🧸 Give them a comfort item (like a small toy, photo, or note) to remind them of home.
😊 Talk positively about school and share your excitement—it’s contagious!
🎨 Encourage independence with small tasks (like opening lunchboxes or putting on shoes).
💬 Create space for them to share their feelings—both the worries and the wins.
❤️ And don’t forget—lots of extra cuddles, patience, and reassurance go a long way.

Let’s cheer on all the little learners taking their brave first steps into school life this year! 🌟📖

In this video, parents and practitioners at Rowland Hill Nursery share how early years education helps children grow in confidence, communication, and curiosity — all through play.

From September 2025 and in addition to the support already available, eligible working parents will be able to access 30 hours of childcare per week, over 38 weeks of the year, starting from the term after their child turns 9 months old. This is all part of the government’s Plan for Change to give every child the best start in life by making high-quality early years education and childcare more affordable and accessible for families.

It is recommended that all parents find out what they might be eligible for and apply ahead of the 31st August deadline (to start using their hours from 1st September) by visiting: www.childcarechoices.gov.uk
