Lynne Learmonth is a qualified counsellor who graduated from Derby University with a post graduate advanced diploma in counselling in 1992. She has since worked for the r**e crisis group and within the women's centre in Derby and also for Burton college as a counsellor, offering telephone, one to one and group counselling and has progressed to undertake some play therapy and family systems training at the Derby sexual abuse unit. Having had a private practice for several years as an independent counsellor and supervisor, Lynne has taught counselling in various centres in Derby and Derbyshire from basic skills right through to Diploma. She has taught in colleges and for private training organisations, enabling others to become qualified counsellors in their own right. She has also written a whole programme of counselling training herself and has had these courses approved and accredited through the Open College Network and then delivered and managed them on a self employed basis. Now returning to adult education after several years as a teacher, Lynne is keen to develop a client base once again, and to offer group training and/or supervision to those who require input to improve listening skills, understanding counselling theories and developing personal awareness. Available to supervise existing practitioners and students in training, she is available to work evenings only in any capacity which involves counselling, training or supervision services.

In cognitive-behavioral therapy we learn how our thoughts, emotions/feelings, and behaviors are all connected. A thought leads to a feeling which leads to a behavior which leads to a thought and so on and so forth.

You think you're a failure, which leads to feelings of defeat and worthlessness, which leads to you ignoring awesome opportunities, which reinforces the thought that you're a failure.... and on and on again.

When we learn how to change those thoughts (by challenging them) or we learn how to influence our feelings/emotions (positive self-talk) or we change our behaviors (coping skills) it affects the whole cycle.

This is why I just love self-care so much because it reinforces all of this. If you start talking yourself up and speaking kindly to yourself - it has a ripple effect. If you start intentionally taking time out of your day to meet your needs - it has a ripple effect. When you start sitting with your feelings and processing and having compassion for yourself - it changes things.

We can have cycles of self-abuse, negativity, sabotage - or we can have cycles of kindness.

“You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.” ~Anne Lamott

I'm learning hard lessons about dealing with an alcoholic relative. It's heartbreaking, but this article might help you to recognise what may be needed to speed up the process of the person feeling the consequences of their own actions more quickly, and maybe then seek support to move away from reliance on alcohol or substance addiction.

For the family of a person with alcoholism or any addiction, detachment allows you to finally let go of their problem. Discover how and why it helps.

My Story

I am Lynne Learmonth, a qualified counsellor who graduated from Nottingham University with a post graduate advanced diploma in counselling in 1993. I have since worked for the r**e crisis group and within the women's centre in Derby and also for Burton college as a counsellor, offering telephone, one to one and group counselling and progressed to undertake some play therapy and family systems training at the Derby sexual abuse unit. Having had a private practice for several years as an independent counsellor and supervisor, I have taught counselling in various centres in Derby and Derbyshire from basic skills right through to Diploma. I have also taught in colleges, universities and for private training organisations, enabling others to become qualified counsellors in their own right. I have written a whole programme of counselling training myself and had those courses approved and accredited through the Open College Network and then delivered and managed them on a self employed basis. Since then my courses are online through Udemy.com and I have written several pocetbook learning manuals which are available through Lulupress and Amazon. Now returning to teach in adult education after several years as a special needs teacher, I am keen to grow my client base once again, and to offer group training and/or supervision to those who require input to improve listening skills, understand counselling theories and/or develop personal awareness. Available to supervise existing practitioners and students in training, I am available to work weekdays and some evenings in any capacity which involves counselling, training or supervision services. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you in future.
