We had an interesting discussion about politics and protest at my yoga class this morning, starting with reducing the voting age to 16, the declining right to protest in this country and meandering, as you do through various facets of human rights.
Which leads to the question - do politics and yoga go together, or should we steer clear of politics in yoga classes?
For me, yes, yoga is political.
Every time I teach or attend a class, I am reminded that this gathering, particularly of women, to study and share ideas is a unique privilege. (This morning's class happened to be all female). So many people around the world are denied this right for economic, cultural, religious or political reasons.
Yoga is banned in some countries because of an association with spiritual practice. I am grateful that freedom of belief and expression has not yet been entirely eroded in this country.
I feel so grateful that I have enough to eat, a safe space to live in, a community to share my joy with, that is not under attack. I do not have to worry that my son will be shot for going to buy food. I am lucky that I have enough head space to even consider attending a yoga class.
So yes! Yoga is political. What in life is not?
Om shanti om.
Om peace, peace, peace
Let me know what you think. Do politics and yoga go together?
