The forward head posture is very common. There is nothing wrong with it unless you do it to excess. Common activities where the head will often move forwards over time are prolonged computer work, xs phone use , and poor sitting habits. If you are physically resilient then you may never get neck pain or cervical headaches . The key is to not allow your head to move too forwards eg a peering posture. Make sure you ‘pack your neck’ , thus maintains your centre of gravity though the middle of your neck which is the weight bearing area . Keep this in mind when you have a lot of desk work or have to use your phone ( like I am doing right now)for an extended period. Don’t forget it is a 24 hour day, so the strain is always there .

Once out of pain, what are the best activities to help you stay better? Most people will say they need to strengthen their ‘core’ to prevent further pain. Others say that exercise made them worse and it’s best they don’t do anything. Exercise is an important way to help prevent further pain , and it has many other general health benefits also. It helps prevent some of the most common health conditions we see today. Firstly many people have a so called weak core but have no pain and never have had ( my father at 96 is a prime example) . Exercise is about building tolerance so your body can do things without developing pain . Physical tolerance comes with gradual strength gains, varying the type exercise you do, and gradually build these until your lifestyle has stopped causing you pain . I have seen people who are worried any movement will make them worse and at the other end of the scale I have see bodybuilders in a lot of pain . . It is about finding what you require, taking the time to improve, and sticking to a regime.

It’s not just about being flexible and loose, nor is it about being tight or stiff. We need both of these to maintain ourselves physically. Taking a patient through simple everyday movements should reveal where you might need flexibility ( WD40) or stability ( duck tape). It doesn’t have to be complicated. Your treatment needs to include hands on treatment t , patient education, and a simple plan to enhance your patient movement. Of course other things come into play like fear of moving , ignoring the warning signs ( pain) , personality, over sensitivity to pain, and personal circumstances. Looking into all these factors will definitely aid your recovery.
