Move 💃| Play 🎨 | Connect 🤝
Last week, I had the privilege of speaking at a Building Active Schools event hosted in a special school. 💬✨
It was an inspiring space, surrounded by passionate educators and practitioners dedicated to creating more inclusive, movement-rich environments for all learners. I spoke about the critical role of movement and play in helping pupils—especially those with additional needs—prepare for learning by regulating their nervous systems.
When we think about learning, we often focus on curriculum and academic outcomes. But learning can’t happen unless a child feels safe, calm, and connected in their body. That’s where movement comes in. From sensory circuits to outdoor play, active transitions to calm, embodied activities—these aren’t “extras.” They are foundations for engagement, focus, and emotional regulation.
In special schools, where many pupils experience challenges with sensory processing, emotional regulation, or communication, movement is not just beneficial—it’s vital. It helps children self-regulate, process stress, and access learning with greater ease and joy.
Huge thanks to the team behind Building Active Schools for creating this platform . 🌟 Let’s continue advocating for movement-rich, emotionally responsive schools where every child can thrive.
