"Northern Ireland has the joint highest rate in Europe of women killed as a result of domestic violence.

The most recent statistics show that Northern Ireland faces an endemic in relation to female murders, with more women per capita murdered in Northern Ireland as a result of domestic violence than any other part of western Europe. In Europe, the murder rate of women subjected to domestic violence is joint highest in Northern Ireland and Romania.

Additionally, instances of domestic violence, mostly related to violence committed against women, are rising significantly in Northern Ireland. Latest PSNI figures show that it received reports of almost 2,000 domestic abuse incidents between 14 December 2021 and 1 January 2022, a 12 per cent increase on the same period the year before.

The rise is consistent with annual figures, which show that in the 12 months from October 1, 2019, to September 30, 2020, there were 32,015 domestic abuse incidents recorded by the PSNI, meaning domestic abuse incidents now account for almost 20 per cent of all police-recorded crime.

Latest PSNI figures show that it received reports of almost 2,000 domestic abuse incidents between 14 December 2021 and 1 January 2022, a 12 per cent increase on the same period the year before.”

The Shark Cage framework is based on the concept of universal Human Rights.
It has five steps that draw on different psychological approaches such as narrative, cognitive behavioural, body based and strength based therapies.
Working through each of the steps helps to strengthen a person's sense of rights and self-worth and equips them with useful life skills.

Step 1: Understanding the Shark Cage metaphor

The purpose of this step is to know that other people’s abusive behaviour is never your fault and violence against girls and women is a widespread social problem, not an individual problem.

Step 2: Renovating your Shark Cage

The purpose of this step is to build and reinforce a strong Shark Cage of Human Rights. Each bar in your Shark Cage represents a human right, such as the right to live free of violence and have freedom of movement.

Step 3: Fixing your Shark Cage alarm

The purpose of this step is to safely reconnect to your emotions and body so your ‘gut instinct’ can tell you immediately when someone is pushing up against your rights or boundaries.

Step 4: Defending your Shark Cage when it is safe to do so

The purpose of this step is to know what to do and how to do it when you notice that someone is pushing up against one of your rights or boundaries.

Step 5: Recognising Sharks & Dolphins

The purpose of this step is to be able to tell if a person is someone who respects and supports your rights and boundaries or if they are a person who pushes up against your boundaries and rights and has a risk of becoming increasingly abusive.
