There is no health without mental health, however our physical health is so inextricably linked to our mental health and gaining better physical health is a powerful tool to improving mental health.

Numerous studies show that physical activity is a powerful tool for improving mental health by assisting with:
1. Improving mood – physical activity releases feel good hormones that make you feel better and give you more energy
2. Better sleep
3. Managing stress and anxiety
4. Better self esteem
5. Reducing the risk of depression
6. Connecting with people

We understand that physical activity can seem like an impossible challenge if you are having a hard time or if you are dealing with chronic pain. There are some suggestions on how to make it easier to start:
7. Work with your own circadian rhythm. Different people find different times of the day harder than others to do things. This could be because of energy levels, mood, pain or medication.
8. Find something you enjoy and that fits within your daily schedule. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or doing a run, any kind of movement is good so try not to compare yourself to others and move at your own pace.
9. If you are struggling - seek help! A good first step is to talk to your GP. If you are experiencing pain or have a condition which is holding you back on getting physical active, our caring and supportive physiotherapists can help. They can offer advice on what exercises you are able to do and support you with your journey.
10. Be kind to yourself – Remember that energy levels vary day by day and it’s ok to take a break
