Found Outdoors CIC

Found Outdoors CIC Rewilding project set in 54 acres of Wiltshire woodland and meadows. Found Outdoors is an outdoor education project founded by us, Fiona and Rich Cassidy.

We focus on education, art, nature recovery, art and wellbeing, helping people of all ages (re)connect with the natural world 🌳🍃 In 2020 we packed in our jobs and bought 54 acres of woodland and meadows to help children and adults reconnect with nature through forest school, site visits, educational days and events. We work with individuals, schools, charities, universities and many other organisations. VISITING FOUND OUTDOORS: For visits and what we're currently up to please see our website. In the near future we hope to host talks, film nights, multi day residentials and much more.

Minding my own business in the sawmill shed I looked up to see this beautiful visitor hopping up the track!

S/he never spotted me, got to within about 10 meters and hopped off into the woods foraging away.

It was really fun to make these bird box kits for Wiltshire Council/Kingdown School. Great to know they had fun and constructed them so beautifully.

We fell our own trees as part of a continuous cover forestry plan to manage our woodland putting the flora and fauna first.

We then mill the trees on site, and cut the resulting timber into kits all ready to be built by the customer.

I'm currently making an order or 10 bird boxes, 10 bat boxes and 2 owl boxes for another event.

If you'd like some bat/bird/owl boxes, as kits or fully constructed, please message us - we'd love to hear from you.

Students at Kingdown School continue to work alongside members of the Warminster Town Council Grounds Team, learning new skills as well as giving back to the local community.

The partnership continues to run, as the group recently helped build nest boxes for use in the town.

The nest boxes were purchased by the town council from Found Outdoors – they are a natural product; hand made from timber felled in their Wiltshire woodland.

A Warminster Town Council spokesperson said: “It was great to once again work with students from Kingdown School and build six nest boxes for use in the community.

“We enjoy sharing our passion for maintaining and improving Warminster as well as teaching and learning from the local students.”

Sarah Miller from Kingdown School added: “Kingdown School is delighted to continue to work closely with the Town Parks service.

“They have been incredibly generous in sharing their time and their expertise with our young people. We are looking forward to continuing our positive contribution to the local community by getting duck boards built for the lake to support the local wildfowl population.”

Kingdown School (Woodcock Road, Warminster, BA12 9DR) is a mixed secondary school and sixth form for students aged 11 to 18.

The grounds team plan to install the six bird boxes in the Lake Pleasure Grounds (Warminster Town Park).

Local students have previously worked alongside Warminster Town Council on various projects in the town centre, Grovelands, the Warminster Community Orchard and other public spaces in the town.

Ugh - social media double post confusion!!! Sorry folks - not sure how this happened but here we are.

Merry Christmas, and thanks for all your support!

It’s been a really big year, not least because it was our 5th birthday!

We’ve put on more events than ever before, had a lot of firsts and done some really exciting conservation work. Here’s 12 things from our year…

- our first ever music events
- our first theatre performance
- our first botanical survey
- our first eDNA tests
- our first deer exclosures
- our first spoon carving workshops
- our first yoga sessions
- lots of bat walks
- thinning and ride widening in the woods
- Pine marten surveying
- habitat creation
…and finally
- started The Wiltshire Spoon Club

* thanks to the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust

And that’s just a part of it. There’s so much more, including the stuff we do with the amazing Youth Adventure Trust and our lovely work experience students from Wiltshire College & University Centreire College Lackham.

Oh, and we’re publishing a poetry book soon thanks to artist in residence & wordsmith Ruth Hill. Watch this space!

Special thanks to collaborators and Aim on the plainimontheplaSiSu Forest SchoolforestschoKathryn RogerswaldfreBeck StubbsnogginanBe & Breathe.and.brRuth Hillk_prodKim Pierpointmpierpointuk and so many others who we’ve worked with this year. Last and very much not least, our two new non-executive directors Nick and Tracy who will be helping us navigate a future (hopefully financially sustainable) path.

We’re still self-funded (and money is easily the biggest issue), but the difference this project is making is truly humbling. Thanks so much to everyone who is part of our story 💚🌳

We had a lot of fun making Pine Marten Feeder boxes with ecologist and friend Gareth Harris a few days ago.

These are based on a design from who hosted a pine marten training day at earlier this year.

The boxes are made from larch felled and milled on site as part of our woodland management program.

They feature a platform for the marten to stand on, a Perspex front so the food is visible and a lightly hinged lid that the martens can flip open. The reason for all this is to allow a camera trap to photograph them while they feed so they can be identified by the unique bib pattern on their chest.

Sadly we don’t yet have pine martens here but we’re looking forward to making more feeders and putting them up in various secret locations!

Pine martens are key woodland predators controlling populations of small mammals and other prey, helping maintain a balanced woodland food web.

They spread seeds by eating berries, supporting forest regeneration and plant diversity.

Finally, they are very partial to grey squirrels, reducing their numbers and squirrelpox transmission, which aids the recovery of native red squirrels.
