Found Outdoors CIC

Found Outdoors CIC Rewilding project set in 54 acres of Wiltshire woodland and meadows. Found Outdoors is an outdoor education project founded by us, Fiona and Rich Cassidy.

We focus on education, art, nature recovery, art and wellbeing, helping people of all ages (re)connect with the natural world 🌳🍃 In 2020 we packed in our jobs and bought 54 acres of woodland and meadows to help children and adults reconnect with nature through forest school, site visits, educational days and events. We work with individuals, schools, charities, universities and many other organisations. VISITING FOUND OUTDOORS: For visits and what we're currently up to please see our website. In the near future we hope to host talks, film nights, multi day residentials and much more.

A black-winged kite has been spotted in Gloucestershire for the first time 🦅
It's possibly only the second sighting in England, and is believed to be staying in the wider area.

The non-migratory bird of prey was seen by a local birder from the WWT's Shepherd's Hut at Middle Point yesterday morning.

Black-winged kites have become a more common sight in southern Europe in recent years.

Preparing for tomorrow’s Spoon Carving workshop with Kathryn (one of the workshop leaders). We will be using Silver Birch one of our trees that came down in a storm over the winter.

It’s going be a gorgeous summers day in the woods. We’re looking forward to our participants joining us!

If you fancy a go at spoon carving or want to hone your skills, our workshops are suitable for beginners and intermediates. All attendees will be offered a space on our upcoming monthly spoon clubs too!

Everyone needs to slowdown once in a while 🌳

The benefits of being out in a green space, walking, exercising or just being are so well documented it’s even prescribed on the NHS in many places.

And another great thing is that it’s free!

Should you prefer a guided experience then you can join us four times a year for our seasonal wellbeing half days. Join our mailing list and follow our social media to see when our next sessions are booking.

Our sessions are in a 54 acre private woodland in central Wiltshire, just south of Devizes.

In the meantime, do yourself a favour and take regular time out in a green space near you 🌳

There’s ladybirds everywhere, hooray!

The large numbers of ladybirds (group noun: a loveliness) this year are due to the warm weather which has increased the number of aphids.

Ladybirds are effective predators of aphids - potentially a major pest for many plant species - so more aphids means more food.

(To quote the BBC website) Tim Coulson, professor of zoology and head of biology at the University of Oxford said: “Warm weather means more aphids because they can complete each generation faster - insects, including ladybirds and aphids, tend to speed up their lives in warm weather.”

There are over 40 species of ladybirds in this country. As well as aphids they feed on scale insets which suck plant sap, often weakening the host plant. Many excrete honeydew which encourages the growth of sooty moulds.

If you want to help insects and other wildlife in this unusually warm weather you can leave shallow dishes with a little water for them.

Last week we got to do a Devizes Café Scientifique talk!

We were delighted to have a small, knowledgeable and enthusiastic group come out to see us.

The talk covered an overview of everything we do here with a whistle-stop guided walk around the top woodland and hollow (and even then we ran over time!). We also got to talk a bit about our sister group - and the work we do with other projects in the county.

Somehow we managed to pick the first non-sunny day in months, still, it was cosy in the barn and coffee and cake always help!

A really big thanks to Beth who invited us to do the talk - spreading the word is such a critical part of our work.

It was a lovely evening - maybe we’ll have to revisit Café Sci for a more in depth look at some of the stuff we touched on. Rewilding is a big subject!

Here’s a closer look at our diy fence work from the previous post. Fiona putting some elbow grease into the fence ratchet tensioner I made for the deer exclosures.

Basically it’s just a couple of lengths of wood bolted onto the end of fence to be tensioned. This is then ratcheted taught from a handily positioned (or not!) tree before stapling the wire to the post. Easy!

Fiona and myself spent a couple of days last week wrangling the first of our two deer exclosures.

Each exclosure is a 4m square area surrounded with 1.9m high steel fencing to prevent deer from getting in. This will then be monitored regularly over the next 2-3 years and compared to a control block to see the difference in the flora that grows in each area. Apart from the obvious damage deer do, they can also be browsing off plants before you’ve even seen them, so this will help us to identify this too.

*note our diy fence tensioner with ratchet straps!

This a DEFRA scheme (FG11) paid for under the Rural Payments System (RPS) - roughly £220/enclosure - constructed to meet the specifications set out in the Forestry Commission Forest Fencing Technical Guide, but with no gates.
