This afternoon a small family gathering of six gathered around a much loved grandmother on the catafalque. It was intimate, personal and peaceful.

A strong independent lady who lived a long and varied life, reaching 90.

Working as part of the cleaning team for the Wakefield Police Force, she claimed to see the reputed Carr Gate ghost and thought nothing of telling one of the police officers off for swearing.

May she rest in eternal peace.

Following the alarming events being reported by the national media regarding a police investigation at a Funeral Directors in Hull, who are NOT members of any national governing body, I would like to take this opportunity to let you know a little about the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and their Code of practice.

Established in 1905, the National Association of Funeral Directors is recognised by His Majesty's Government and its external agencies as the trade association that represents and sets the standards for UK funeral firms.

Bearing the NAFD logo indicates a professional credibility and trustworthiness to bereaved families.

The NAFD's standards are high and in order to maintain them, standards and quality are monitored by the Independent Funeral Standards Organisation (IFSO) and members have to satisfy key professional competence before they can be admitted into membership of the National Association of Funeral Directors.

The NAFD's logo is, therefore, the "kite mark" for the funeral profession, adding credibility to member businesses and helping to instil in bereaved families the confidence that NAFD members are committed to delivering the highest quality of service.

NAFD members must abide by a strict code of practice.
The Code is designed to help members to act in the publics interest and aspire to the highest professional standards, as well as more general requirements to meet all relevant laws and regulations.

Members premises' are regularly inspected to maintain compliance and ensure the highest standards of service is being provided.

The inspection includes thorough, physical on-site inspections which can happen without warning, at any time.
These comprehensive inspections include a number of checks in the mortuary area and how the deceased are cared for.

ATTENDED & UNATTENDED FUNERALS
The dignity, respect and emotional benefit that an attended funeral brings to family and friends is immeasurable.
There has been massive TV coverage of Direct - Unattended cremations, by large corporate cremation companies, who operate on a national basis, often hundreds of miles out of the area.
The public need to know that this type of cremation, offers no funeral service, or chance to say goodbye in a respectful and dignified way, in fact to be quite blunt, it’s nothing more than a disposal service.

A respectful funeral service is not just for human’s. We had a funeral service for our pet dog, who formed a massive part of our lives, and it was the least we could have done for our dearest dog. A coffin was provided, resting in her kennel, family and friends in attendance, kind words, memories, music and food. The other dog, her daughter, never left her side, even in death, and grieved with the rest of us. The whole funeral was done with respect and dignity, and gave all great comfort and emotional benefit.

'A life may not be as long as it should be, but memories will make that life last forever'.

Today we gathered in the Dewsbury Moor Crematorium Chapel to say farewell to a man gone too soon at 59.

A family man, who warmed your heart with the support, care and love he offered those around him.

He loved Tenerife and his two daughters and two granddaughters are going to scatter him there. Perfect.

Some family members placed red roses on his coffin top. Beautiful touch. 🌹

Thank you to our Funeral Director Richard Fearnley and his team from Richard Fearnley Independent Funeral Directors for the care, compassion and support they have provided the family in the last couple of weeks.

Remembrance Day will mean many different things to many different people, but the overall message is peace. For myself, in addition to the memory of all the people who lost their lives during conflicts, it’s the memory of a very dear friend, who’s funeral I was honoured to be engaged to conduct in Marlow, London, on 11th November 2021. Nothing but the finest was provided for this special lady, with the finest Rolls Royce fleet taking her on a final journey from Lytham St Annes, to the final resting place in her beloved Marlow, London, starting from the Complete Angler, located on the river Thames. All carefully planned and requested by her to the finest detail of splendour and dignity.
Although I conduct funerals every single week, it’s always hard to conduct the funeral of a dear friend, but something I must do when requested.
Remembering Helen with love and all the fallen and Peace be with you and your families on this special day of Remembrance.
