As we step into 2024, toxic positivity will be flying around. You may be feeling the pressure to make a big resolution. Social media has already started bombarding me with gyms, diets and lifestyle advice after encouraging me to indulge during the festivities. So, I am here to remind you, talking helps. It does. Talk to friends. Talk to charities. Talk to your Doctor. Talk to someone. Don't worry about a resolution. Just focus on small changes that need to happen. Big ones will come.

The article below is a really good read and may help you feel better about just wanting to survive emotionally in the year ahead, without making any grand resolutions.

A good carol service always puts me firmly in the Christmas spirit and is more often than not a yearly tradition.

I am not religious but understand how in grief it can be a comfort for people.

But my tip for today is connecting with others and making sure that you stay social. It really is a help during intense grief.

A hearty sing along with strangers and family cleared the lungs and in a bittersweet way, helped me think of those I'd lost.

2 sleeps until the day society puts immense pressure upon us to enjoy. Remember, have the Christmas you're going to have and make it work for you.

If you need to talk, from 2024 I will be opening up my calendar for people to have a safe place to share their grief. If you want a quick chat with no obligation please do book some time with me from January .

DM me or email me at thecreativegriefstudio@gmail.com for more information and a welfare check in from January.

Tip: put aside some time to reflect.

You may need a good cry to help you this festive season. Tears:

-are self-soothing
-show others we need support
-release oxytocin and endorphins and can act as pain relief
-reduce distress after the cry
-contain a number of stress hormones and other chemicals.
-studies have shown can aid sleep

So put time aside and plan a good reminiscing of your loved one. Prepare and be open to a good blub. It will help rather than fighting them back.

Tip: boundaries!

When we feel triggered by something a person does or say when we feel we have expressed ourselves it usually isn't a malicious thing. People push our limits because they haven't understood us clearly.

When we are in intense grief, it can be hard to state our needs or even know them. But forming safe and clear boundaries with yourself and those around you can help you start to identify when you are comfortable and when you are not.

A boundary at the festive season could sound like, "I really can't bring myself to go to the carol service, even though I said I would. It isn't the right place for me with everything that has been happening. But I would love to join you doing something else instead?"

If someone cannot hear a clear and reasonable statement like that and respect your boundary from understanding your position... The issue is with them, not you.

Set your festive boundaries and be clear and measured in your needs.

Those who are living with grief have experienced a devastating change. Embracing the change is one of the steps towards a healthy grief.

Top tip: Alter traditions so that they work for you. Or stop them altogether! If it doesn't fit your new 'you' don't force it.

A tradition of mine used to be making a wreath for myself and my Nanna. Once my Dad passed away, she couldn't bear to have a wreath on the door. I didn't stop making something for her, I just changed it. So I still have my wreath and I make her a display for inside.

What could you change so it works for you? Or what do you need to stop?

Tip: This may seem so simplistic, but so many times people forget that how we breathe can help regulate how we feel. So calm the breaths, slow them down and focus on them.

Stress heightens at this time of year. Getting the presents, rushing around, illness slowing us down, preparing big meals - this can make us anxious. Try box breathing, alternate nostril breathing or Lion's Breath to help you cope.

In grief, we can lose our sense of purpose or meaning. Reaching out and doing good can help us feel like we continue to matter. During the festive season, there are so many ways we can support others.

Please share with links to good causes in your communities.

I'm sharing these wonky trees bought in support of the air ambulance from Earnshaws. A little addition to my imperfect Christmas, but the right one for me.
