Hard work isn’t the problem. Empty fatigue is. šŸ›‘

I’ll be the first to admit it: I love a high-intensity, sweaty session. There is nothing like the feeling of pushing your limits in a Hyrox or a long run. šŸƒā€ā™€ļø

But I also know that if you’re in your 40s and you’re chasing that ā€œcrushedā€ feeling every day—without the right physiological foundations—you are redlining your engine.

When we work hard on an empty tank or without structural insurance (like heavy lifting), our brain perceives a ā€œFamine Signal.ā€

The result?

Your cycle vanishes or becomes irregular.

Your 3 PM energy is non-existent.

You stop getting stronger, even though you’re working harder than ever.

I am a Hormone Hybrid. I still do the hard work. I still get the sweat sessions in. But I do it with a Strategic Plan:

1. I Fuel the Work: No more fasted ā€œgrind.ā€ I give my body the ā€œSafe Signalā€ it needs to burn energy, not store it.

2. I Lift for Power: I use heavy weights to protect my bone density and muscle mass as hormones fluctuate.

Most active women in their 40s pride themselves on their discipline. They train hard, they ā€œeat clean,ā€ and they keep pushing.

But there is a thin line between ā€œPerformanceā€ and ā€œSurvival Mode.ā€ šŸ›‘

These aren’t just ā€œsigns of ageā€ā€”they are physiological signals that your engine is struggling to keep up with the load.

I spent years thinking I was hitting menopause early. My GP even said the same . šŸ›‘

In 2021, I came off the pill. I was approaching 40 and I was done with synthetic hormones.

When my cycle became irregular, I blamed the years on the pill. When it disappeared for 4 months at a time, I’ll be honest—I thought it was a blessing. It didn’t interfere with my training.

But I was redlining my engine and I didn’t even know it.

For 5 years, my periods were a mess.

My GP told me what most women hear: ā€œYou’re in your early 40s, Adele. This is peri-menopause.ā€ I was even put on HRT.

It was a hard pill to swallow. I felt like my body was failing me.

The missing piece? LEA (Low Energy Availability).

I’d ruled it out because I ate A LOT. I wasn’t losing weight. I thought energy deficiency would have meant I was putting less in than what I was burning off.

I was wrong.

Here is the logic shift that changed everything:

In your 40s, your body is hyper-sensitive to cortisol. It doesn’t care about the ā€œtotal caloriesā€ you eat at dinner. It cares about the Nutrient Timing during your training window.

My body was taking everything it needed for my high-intensity training and pulling back on my cycle because it didn’t feel ā€œsafe.ā€ It was in survival mode, not performance mode.

The Result?

After digging into the physiology of the female athlete and fixing my nutrient timing, I got my cycle back. I have been regular for 5 months now.

The Truths:

• Missing a period isn’t a blessing: It’s a warning light for reduced bone density and metabolic health.

• LEA doesn’t have a ā€œlookā€: You don’t have to be losing weight to be under-fueled.

• The ā€œMonday Resetā€ is a trap: Reducing calories midweek to ā€œmake upā€ for the weekend is the fastest way to spike cortisol and tell your brain there’s a famine coming.

Stop guessing. Start fueling.

For the first time in years, I’ve had a full week off training!

No heavy lifting. No running. No Hyrox. No redlining. The only things I’ve done are walking and mobility.

The ā€œold manualā€ in my head was screaming at me. It told me I was losing my fitness, falling behind, and being lazy.

There were moments I almost gave in and headed for the squat rack just to quiet the noise.Ā 

But I stayed the course. Here is the logic:Ā 

• Blunting the Spike: After the marathon, my cortisol was already high. Pushing back into high-intensity training would have just kept me in ā€œsurvival mode.ā€Ā 

• Resetting the Engine: In your 40s, recovery is where the progress happens. By sticking to walking and mobility, I’ve given my nervous system a chance to actually down-regulate.Ā 

• The Result: I feel incredible. I’m going into next week feeling ā€œready to goā€ rather than just ā€œgetting through.ā€Ā 

It’s not about doing less; it’s about being strategic so you can do more of what you love, for longer.Ā
